"Just when you thought that the Americans couldn't be any sillier with their reality shows, here comes the topper," reports the Guardian. "Steven Slater, the flight attendant that told an airplane full of passengers to "fuck off," took two beers and slid down the escape shoot, has captured the fancy of the fickle Americans and has landed a contract for a reality show. First reports out of the US hinted that the program would be called, "Fuck Off," but fearing backlash from the Christian Right, the tentative title is, "Take this Job and Shove it."
Americans, always ready for a new folk hero, has made the flight attendant the "hero de jour," with t-shirts, folk songs, and Time Magazine plans a cover picture and article. The New York Times is reporting that the craze is sweeping America and an exclusive Manhattan nursery school issued a statement saying a five-year-old student yelled at her teacher, "Piss off crack ho, I'm out of here." After grabbing her crayons, she mooned her classmates and left the building. The Times reports her parents are suing the school and the teacher has been reprimanded.
In Washington DC, Republican members of the US Congress, upset by the actions of Slater and fearing a general worker backlash, are proposing a bill to eliminate the 13th amendment to the constitution, the amendment passed in 1865 forbidding slavery. Congressman John Boehner, Republican Minority leader in the House of Representatives, tried to soften the impact of the bill. "Actually, this is not such a big deal," said Boehner. "Not much will really change for America's workers. They are a happy people, after all. No one said they couldn't play golf."
In related news, the Guardian is reporting that President Obama is considering a major address from the Oval Office in which he will tell his critics on the left, as well as those on the right side of the political spectrum to, "Bite me!"
