Paul Wallner, 34, who battered his wife to death, and then hid her body in a freezer in a shed in his garden for three years, has been jailed for life.
He convinced her family that she had died of natural causes and went to extreme lengths to maintain the deceit. He was discovered when he went abroad with his new girlfriend and dumped her body in a wheelie bin, where it was discovered.
At the trial the public gallery thought the judges comments during the summing up were inappropriate; he said that to keep a body in the freezer painted Mr Wallner in a cold light. He went onto say that he would have no choice due to the severity of the offence but to be rigid in his sentencing, and that he hoped he would be given a frosty reception by fellow inmates. A member of the jury said that the case made his heart run cold.
