Top striker Dan Druff has joined Ayr United from Wigan. Ayr manager Phil Barber confirmed the move and said that Druff would link with Italian Al Opecia up front, for the cup game against Hibernian.
The Ayr manager said that the highlights could be seen on television. If they were no good he'd have the highlights removed. He was however optimistic that his other signing Craig Short would form a double centreback pairing with Alan Curlese the Frenchman.
Many pundits said he should link Adams to Short but he is going for the Short and Curlese. If he could sign Short's brother Tim to play down the sides he would have a Short back and sides.
He was also excited by Dennis Trim who he found in the minor leagues. He says he was combing through the Berwick Sunday Leagues. Yormouth United offered him Walter Perm but the lad was all over the place so he settled for Trim.
Did Barber feel Trim would settle? "Well a lot better than Perm for starters. If I can bring in Tim Short then we'll have a nifty Trim with Short back and sides."
Barber was however wary of his goalkeeping problem. "The first choice Gary Lice is brilliant but inconsistent while his understudy Jack Nits is your plodding Mr Reliable but he won't win you cups".
Is there a solution? : "I've been scratching my head quite a bit on this one. I mean people tell me that you can't have Lice and Nits at Ayr. I say sod 'em if they gel then who knows?"
Ayr United was of course formed in the 18th Century when Lord Poncenby Follicle a member of Parliment for the Whigs Party decided to create a football team. They were called Syrup of Figs XI but due to their narrow escapes which were quite Ayry, the name was changed.
Punters believed it was more natural to ditch the Whigs and show the true Ayr. The rest is as they say history.
It is as a part of this history that the new generation like Lice, Nits and of course Dan Druff must now show their mettle. Anything less will leave them on football's scrapheap.
We leave with the words of manager Phil Barber ringing in our ears. "I was told that I was being rash to keep both Lice and Nits. I don't care if they aren't glamour players as long as they give us their all. I remember years ago when I signed the Vietnamese striker Veneral Diseese, the fans - shoulda seen them applaud - got so loud because nobody wanted to have the last clap!!"
