THE GOVERNMENT was thrown on to the defensive last night as evidence emerged that it was willing to agree to a new EU tax on UK daylight saving when the clocks go back one hour on Sunday.
Penny-pinching senior European Commission officials said poor EU states were now ready to CASH IN on Britain's extra hour in bed on the last weekend in October.
Gordon Brown had ruled out what amounts to yet another EU income tax, but optimism in Brussels suggested Britain may give in as new EU countries seek to exploit the British workers' hard earned extra hour in bed.
The new tax will OUTRAGE hard-pressed British workers, who will see their extra hour on Sunday slashed from 60 minutes to 45 minutes. They will also see a WHOPPING hike in tax hit their pay packets this week when greedy EU mandarins will take EVEN MORE.
We say: "Hands Off Our Extra Hour, You Square-Headed Muppets!"
