AUSTRIA (FUCKING) -- Travel. The answer is a resounding - YES! Fucking is a tiny safe haven located approx 27 Kms north of Salzburg. "Everyone's welcome to Fucking," said Mayor Klaus Kamelhoffener, "but, and I emphasize but, no stealing the Fucking signs."
The traffic sign, at the entrance to the village of Fucking - Bitte - nicht so schnell! - is frequently stolen. "Bitte - nicht so schnell!" is German for "Please - not so fast!" Fucking signs now theft-proof.
Officials acted because they were fed up with English-speaking tourists stealing them as souvenirs.
After the last 'Welcome to Fucking' sign was stolen, Mayor Klaus Kamelhoffener ordered brand new theft-proof road signs. They are bolted and welded to steel posts embedded in concrete in the ground and the mayor added: "It would take all night to steal one."
Fucking always attracts a lot of attention in the summer months, with tourists driving up from nearby Salzburg to pose for pictures in front of the Fucking signs.
But Mayor Kamelhoffener said that while the money tourists spent in the area was welcome, locals were fed up with having to replace their Fucking signs.
"Here we have tranquillity, clean air, lakes, acres of forests and some of the most breathtaking vistas one could imagine," says Augustfru Mukelbauer, who runs a guest house in a medieval pile just outside the village. "Yet, still there is this obsession with Fucking. Just this morning I had to tell an English lady who stopped by that there were no Fucking postcards."
