Manchester City, the world's richest football club, have tonight gone out of the Carling Cup at the hands of minnows Brighton & Hove Albion, and, according to manager, Mark Hughes, were: "made to look like idiots!"
With the scores level at 2-2 after extra time, the game went to penalties, a nail-biting affair. which ended with the South coast club going through 5-3.
There were scenes of mayhem from the 9,000 crowd at the borrowed stadium, Brighton being 'roving tenants' after they were evicted from their old Goldstone Ground several years ago.
Sky Blues' new Arab owner watched in disbelief from the grandstand as his multimillion-pound 'stars' succumbed to the League One side's superior ability to take penalties.
City manager Mark Hughes looked embarrassed as his side trooped off the pitch.
He said:
"I'm embarrassed."
