The BBC were inundated with complaints tonight after the first quarter-final between Portugal and Czech Republic saw Ronaldo winking before the 9pm watershed.
The incident happened at 8.25pm during the first half of the match, just after Ronaldo hit the woodwork for the first time. The score was 0-0 at the time. The Real Madrid striker scored the only goal of the game in the 80th minute, and proceeded to wink again, this time after the watershed, but still while many young children would have been watching.
Presenter Gary Lineker apologised at full-time for the winking winker, and BBC Director-General Mark Thompson issued a statement promising that the BBC would switch to a tic-tac advert like ITV Sport if Ronaldo winked again during a Portugal match covered on the BBC.
Ronaldo first angered the British public in 2004, when contriving to get club team-mate Wayne Rooney sent off and then winked to his team bench, in a match the Portugeezers won on penalties.
Portugal will play the winner of Germany and Greece in the first semi-final.
