Art the Real Cure for Schizophrenics?

Los Angeles: Psychologists at LA's Psychological Research Unit have come up with a new view of schizophrenia.

Explained Dr. Ty Polar:

"It would seem to us that schizophrenia is more a socially/family conditioning phenomenon and not, as we presupposed, a genetic fault. In our Post Modernist world, alternative views of reality are axiomatic. Alternative ways of seeing things are prevalent in all disciplines and are considered au fait irrespective of their irrational bases.

"We have Tarot readings running alongside parallel universes theory. You can read both in our daily newspapers. None of these people who propound these beliefs are considered deranged and locked up any more than a Catholic bishop is locked up for falling on his knees before a product of his worshipful imagination or a child locked up for talking to his "imaginary friend.

"Thus we believe that the schizophrenic is basically an artist at heart experimenting with alternative ways of viewing the world, which, after all, is what all art and modern life is based on. Many artists we revere from Blake to Picasso would have been diagnosed schizoid if put to the test. Jesus Christ certainly would have been put under some form of medication and possibly electro-convulsive therapy.

"It may indeed be the case that the schizophrenic is a man more in tune with his times than the rest of us. What he needs, above all, is an outlet for expressing his creative view of reality which in a Post Modernist context he is free to do. He does not need medication. He needs opportunity. These are our findings."

The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
