Mushrooms, the model for 'darning mushrooms' - if anyone remembers 'darning'

I don't know why people have stopped darning socks. I have a wonderful collection of 'darning mushrooms' of all shapes and sizes.

Some darning mushrooms are for darning worn-out 'elbows' of favourite sweaters, others for sock heels, others for sock toes. Different sizes of mushrooms for different sizes of sweaters and socks.

Some are quite 'flat' for darning other parts of sweaters and socks, the 'flat' parts, should they get a hole in them. So you might say, 'then they can't be called mushrooms'.

Well, I study fungi and love to take photographs, which I wish I could include in this article because, there are mushrooms named 'bracket' mushrooms which grow outwords from tree trunks. They are quite 'flat' like little shelves.

The art of 'darning' is dying. I tried to start a 'class' at our local community centre, but no-one signed up for it.

People say they just don't have the time now.....or....it's cheaper to buy new socks that darning yarn.

Well, let me add that, during the time it took me to type this article I could have darned three socks.

I cannot even pass this skill on to my daughters because last time I mentioned it, the oldest one said,

"Oh, go put a sock in it mom!" (She has a Canadian accent, hence 'mom' and not 'mam')

Now I ask you...is THAT the way to talk to a loving parent?

The funny story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
