image for "The Sopranos : The Musical" begins rehearsals

The long awaited Soprano's musical moved one step nearer to opening yesterday as the cast met for the first day of rehearsals.

Penned by a combination of the show's original created David Chase and musicals legend Andrew Lloyd Webber the show is already expected to become one of the big hits on Broadway in 2009.

James Gandolfini famously turned down the role of Tony for the show, and ex-Roseanne star John Goodman accepted the chance to take over one of New Jersey's most famous mafia families.

Other cast members include ex Saved by the Bell star Dustin Diamond as "Christopher Moltisanti", Henry Winkler as "Paulie Gualtieri", and ex sports star Dan Marino as "Silvio Dante".

Most controversially, the character of "Uncle Junior" has been changed to a female role of "Auntie June" and is set to be played by Betty White, most famous for her multi award winning role of "Rose Nylund" in "The Golden Girls".

The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
