During an interview with 'Takes the Biscuit' magazine, Celebrity Chef, Jamie Oliver suggested that the British cared more about getting drunk than they did about eating well.
He said; "Keith Floyd got it right when he cared more for his food, but enjoyed getting drunk whilst preparing it. Good owd Keith - now there's a boy who taught me a thing or two! Floyd told me that one of the most important things was to always have a bottle of wine on hand and if the meal took 20 minutes to prepare, then by the time you've prepared it, you would see double! Hic! The food would look twice as nice. Guaranteed!"
"Nowadays people have really big tellies so that they can relish all that kosher nosh in my Stainsbury's adverts. The food looks so inviting, but then so do I. They watch food programmes and the mere thought of it makes 'em think I'll wash it down wiv a pint or three! Then what do they do? They think I'll have a pie or a packet of crisps or some scratchings. Is it any wonder that our fabulous dishes are being lost?"
A spokesman for MFI, Ivor Wardrobe, told In Seine News;
"Oliver has made a point that 80% of Britons do not sit around the table for dinner anymore and that may well be a fact, but in my experience that is because they have to have somewhere to put their telly on. In fact sales of our tables have gone up in direct proportion to the amount of HD flat-screens being sold by manufacturers. Having to buy a table and a telly to put on, as well as buying a TV licence can be very expensive and leaves very little money left to buy good food. It's a vicious circle these days."
