Xena - the first female Dr Who?

Lucy Lawless, star of the cult series ‘Xena: Warrior Princess', is the hot favourite to take over the Tardis and become the first ever female Dr Who.

With David Tennant announcing that he too wants to quit the UK show after a single series, the BBC is upping the ante to bring a new twist to time travel.

With Christopher Eccleston and Tennant both relinquishing their Time Lord status after one series, the cult show is now cashing in on the notion of ‘guest Doctors' - a development of the concept which has worked so well with presenters of the cult quiz show ‘Have I Got News For You'.

Landing Lawless (38) for the role would be a major coup for the BBC as the New Zealand actress has a massive international following and even became a gay icon because of her screen relationship with Xena sidekick Gabrielle, played by Renee O'Connor.

While diehard Xena fans would probably love to see the two together again as time travellers, it is highly likely that Billie Piper will carry on in her role as Rose.

As to whether or not there will be any ‘chemistry' between Rose and the new Doctor is not known.

The resurrection of the Dr Who series has been a phenomenal success but it is believed the BBC is desperate to grow its international appeal. Lucy Lawless is seen as being the ideal choice to do exactly that.

The BBC's head of light entertainment, Sefton Delmer, said: "It is all very speculative at the moment and we are still at the very early stages of planning the next series of Dr Who.

"There is no doubt that Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant have raised the show to an entirely new level and both Doctors have been immensely popular.

"We still hope David will continue in the role but, inevitably, there will come a time when we need a fresh approach. The idea of a female Doctor has certainly been discussed and Lucy Lawless, should she be available, would be a very interesting idea."

Management for Lawless would only say: "We can neither confirm nor deny that Lucy has been part of discussions on the future direction of Dr Who but she is well aware of the series, is a regular viewer and wishes it continued success."

The funny story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
