I tried facebook for advertising some spoof articles as I think that some others have - it isnt particularly useful - nor is digg or stumble upon.
I have quite a few face book friends - or at least my alter ego has but so far that all it does it build up list of friends all rather unpreoccupied with doing anything but build up lists of friends. |

Erm...
I said Yes *I* use Facebook. I've got to come clean, I can't hold it in any longer, it's eating away at me. The deceit, the lies, the fabrication. I can't take any more. I wrote a novel based on the creation of a fictitious person on Facebook and the malleability of memory. To do a bit of research, I created said fictitious person, and let my story unfold in real life, as I constructed the story. Though the novel has some things 'I' did that *I* didn't do, mainly because I'd be writing this from prison had *I* done them. Now the novel (Fakebook.con) appears to have bombed somewhat with the agents: ten rejections and counting. Ironically, my fictitious person is quite popular. She currently has two dozen 'friends' who went to her school and 'remember' her (the premise of the book). I've had quite a few conversations (email and chat) with other people from the school who were supposedly in her class. She has made just one friend request...which was quite carefully worked out as to who it should be, and over the past year through the way that Facebook works, the rest of her old school friends have approached her. One of whom claimed to have walked to school with her for two years (go figure). I've not had the heart to kill of my fictitious person, so she still exists, and still gets emails from old friends. I've discovered that people's memories are rubbish and easily manipulated. Using a combination of research, cold reading and repeating information told by one person to another, I've been able to hold reminiscing conversations with real ex-pupils of the school in real time. What this says about Facebook, I don't know. However, a cautionary warning - don't trust it! It's evil! There, I'm glad I've got that off my chest...because I am an evil madman who has manipulated over twenty strangers and I deserve to be punished. Although thinking about it, it's probably kudos that has meant the agents are rejecting me. I.a.i.n. (I Am an Insane Nutter) |

You're on the right track. Keep looking. It sounds marketable to me, but then again, anything that sounds too much like critical analysis of popular culture might only be marketable to people who read and write spoofs. Maybe it could be the flagship novel published by TheSpoof.com Press! |

Well, after tweeking out my profile, adding a few friends, sending a few messages, what do I do now?... Facebook is for the young. Give me email or the telephone anyday, and come and see my photos in my photo album (the physical one on my coffee table).

I can see it being repeated as an experiment in documentary form. TV stations seem out to bash the internet in all of its manifestations (except for their own website). You should approach a production company with a summary. I'd certainly read the book though Makes me wonder though Iain wtf you might get up to on the spoof forums!!!! |

Yeppers I use FB but am getting afraid of it. And I post every one of those spoofs I write to FB but am not really sure how many "friends" actually are interested. I am hoping an open source alternative will get some popular support cause this whole "privacy is no more on FB" gives me the heebie jeebies.
BTW - The fakebook.con sounds like a solid idea. Just keep at it, I read a book where famous authors told their stories of how to get published. For many, it took an insane amount of persistance. And if you are writing spoofs, you are already insane... |

I tried it for a few weeks and found it to be a collosal waste of time and energy.
Everyone who went to the same school that I did (regarless of our age differences) suddenly wanted to be my friend, whether I knew them or not. Crap kept coming through my spam filters. People kept sending me these stupid, dumbass questionaires or surveys or "presents." I erased my profile and left. This place is less of a waste of time (but I won't say by how much). At least on here, Chamone and Jenny Bigtits would flirt with us. |

I use it all the time.
All my notebooks are covered with the skin from the faces of the Senegalese dancing girls I have ritually slaughtered (Friday night is Senegalese dancing girl slaughtering night in my imaginary lighthouse). |

I don't use Facebook. I don't trust it because of privacy issues. I do use Twitter, however. I love to "tweet" about my spoofs, my short stories, whatever. Fabulous for getting "hits." And it's really easy to use. A side benefit is that, since tweets can only be 140 characters or less, it's taught me a lot about writing concisely! |

I use facebook and twitter, but only to spread links that I write on Multiply. I occasionally go there when I get a message from a relative or old high school friend, but that's about the extent of my useage there. I sometimes play Farmville when my mom sends me something and urges me to go get the gift she sent me. As Jalapeno man said, it's a colossal waste of time.

On the otherhand, it's a great place to find Goth girls who want to be bound and abused if you're into that sort of thing.

I don't and won't. I live in the Land of Lincoln and HE'd never have, either.
I understand it's popular downstate, though. I hear all the cool misogynistic megalomaniacs are on it. |
