After the painful, if gut-wrenchingly familiar, quarter-final defeat on penalties to Italy abruptly ended fanciful hopes of European Championship glory, England will look to gain more than the Italians who, despite their thrashing in the final by Spain, have their future mapped out.

But this is the season in which life for England must also prove to be better on the pitch and I must show that I can oversee progression during a World Cup qualifying campaign that begins next month.
