Now, I find myself last night embroiled in a row over claims that I sacked one of my Cabinet ministers because she was too old.

I had to deny last night that I told Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman that she was losing her job because of her age.

A Westminster blog claimed that Mr Cameron had justified sacking Ms Spelman, 54, on the grounds of her age, pointing out that Sir George Young, 71, was quitting too.
