I heard the two girls on the Radio 5 show this morning. They gave all the usual responses to Fat Criticism:

we can't get jobs, we're not spongers, we want to work, we don't eat much etc etc

One of them is a trained hairdresser, apparently. She was bemoaning the fact that no salon wants to employ a 24-stone hairstylist.

Well, would you want your hair cut by someone that resembled a circus tent?

"She just wants to give him and her other sons things which she never had". Presumably intelligence, social awareness, a modicum of common sense. The list would appear endless.

The article says the family's weight combined is 83 stone.

How many kilograms (or pounds) equals a stone?

I've seen this measurement of weight in books set in the UK, Ireland, Scotland etc. and have always wondered what a stone translates into. Now seems as good a time to ask as any.

Yes, MW, I'd let her do my hair as long as she did a good job. Of course I always read a book while getting my hair done, so it's likely I'd forget that I had a bounce house with a scissors cutting my hair.

I do think it seems a little unfair they are treated so badly. Their obesity is obviously debilitating, and regardless of whose fault that is, they shouldn't be derided for it.

I don't believe their claims that their obesity is genetic, simply because it has not been proven scientifically, and because I know how easy it is to become overweight - and con yourself into think it's not because you're troughing your face.

I'm a big bloke. I weighed over 19 stone (266lbs 120kg) in September last year. That wasn't genetic, it was pies. I'm not sure what kickstarted my impulse to lose weight, but I decided it was necessary to change or else I would end up a real lardass (not that I wasn't one already!)

I now weigh 16 stone (224lbs 101kg), but I'm still a long way off my "ideal" weight which, according to BMI wotnots, is 11 stone (154lbs 70kg).

I got stuck in the belief that my weight wasn't due to what I was eating. "I don't eat breakfast, I rarely eat lunch," was my usual thought pattern. But I'd come home and have dinner, followed by chocolate biscuits, followed by crisps, followed by chocolate, followed by cheese, followed by ... - I was simply lying to myself.

I read in the article that the mother has lost 5 stone - which is really admirable and surely shows her weight is unlikely to be down to her genes. She got a real slap in the face from the newspaper stories which gave her the impetus to lose weight. I just hope she can see that and keep it up.

A stone is 6.4kg

(Quick tip: Google will do these translations for you. Enter: x y to z and it'll give you the answer.

Where x is a number, y is a unit of measurement to convert from and z is a unit of measurement to convert to.)

I now wish to retract my earlier statement published above, on the grounds that it didn't go anywhere near far enough.

No, I don't mean that. I mean, well done to that fat lady for losing weight, and well done to you, Mark, for looking your demons in the eye, and facing the truth. Which was, you were eating too many chocolate biscuits whilst watching the telly, instead of keeping your mind and fingers busy by doing the editing on here.

That'll teach you to get your priorities right.

I read the article again, I think it was the daddy who lost the 5 stone.

I found this breakdown of their weights: Philip Chawner, 53, and his 57-year-old wife Audrey weigh 24st. Their daughter Emma, 19, weighs 17st, while her older sister Samantha, 21, weighs 18st.

I don't really understand why they can't work. Well, maybe the parents is understandable, but there shouldn't be anything stopping the girls - and the dad doesn't look too out of shape to me.

Hey ho. Ain't nothin I can do about it.

I don't know which one it was, but one of the daughters confessed on the radio that she was 24 stones.

I thought it was the daughter, anyway.

That's a big girl.

Where I worked before (I won't mention the name!) there was a woman who was massive. I can't say that I saw her gorge herself or anything, but it was more a matter of what she ate, rather than how much.

Funny thing is, she kept making these cakes. Do you know what she called these cakes?

Mars Bar Cakes!

Honestly, this is fact. She came to work one day with a Mars Bar Cake, and casually informed us that she had put 27 Mars Bars in it, as well as 6 Cadbury's Dairy Milk bars and 'a quantity of sugar'.

Now, tell me again, ***, why are you fat?

Having seen her picture, it would certainly make more sense if that were the case.

Sickening. But I've been there before.

One thing I would like to eat is this.

One day, one day.

Yeah I agree Mark. Those guys didn't look like they were trying - I mean sharing! And picking at it daintily. I'm glad to see the guy on the left had his hair cut specially for the day - maybe by someone overweight. And it's nice to see Wolverine using cutlery for once.

Well done on your weight loss - hard work isn't it - particularly in a sedentary job. Hey that gives me an idea for a story...

All the best
Roy

266 lbs? Sounds like a typical football players weight over here! But I guess you forgot to mention that you're only 5'2" in height!

So, like, is stuff over when you start singing?

Tis not the 'lardies' that concern this writer as much as the spoiled child!

Regarding weight - I have four times gone from 210 lbs down to 180 lbs and back up again.

2 months ago I weighed 208 lbs - today I weigh 184.

My weight gain is entirely down to.....greed...and my loss entirely down to....vanity.

There, I said it.

The spoiled child will get his just desserts one day.

The lardies will just get their desserts.

The Simpsons

Mindy: Well, desserts aren't always right.
Homer: But they're so sweet and tasty.
