Although we lost Hamilton Jordan, who was Chief of Staff during the Carter administration, in May of 2008, he left several stories that have been passed around close friends of the family.
One of Jordan's favorites was that the Singer Elvis Presley was so excited that a fellow southerner was president of the United States, he called Jimmy Carter often during his years in office.
"The trouble was, Elvis was usually pretty well loaded when he called," Jordan says. "It got to the point that the president would just hand off the phone to me or whoever was around." But The King was so high, he "never caught on."
"So one day Billy, Jimmy's brother, was there and he'd been throwing back several beers, so I handed him the phone."
"The next thing you know, Billy's laughing and they're on there for an hour with the jokes and both still drinking and suddenly we hear this "Whump!" sound and Billy is out cold, still holding the phone."
"So some people lift him up and put him in the next room and I can still hear Elvis' voice on there."
"I finally told him that the president was out."
"Elvis let out a big laugh and said, 'I know, I heard him hit the floor. I done drunk the president of the United States under the table!"
