Residents in the sleepy town of Bedworth awoke today to find themselves at the centre of a mystery that has baffled police for over 30 years, as a residential garden was excavated following an anonymous tip off.
Police were alerted to the house after reports of the home owner had been seen burying various animals in the dead of night over the last 10 years, including hamsters, rabbits, cats and even a dog.
Police suspect Red Rum's remains may also be buried there, as the horse was never found.
Neighbours have been worried at the regularity of animals been buried in the garden, sometimes as often as one a year.
Local nosey sod, Mrs N. Parker told me "he's always at it, if it's not another hamster it's a bloody dog.
I reckon they must have buried loads of poor animals in that garden over the years, and who knows how they met their grisly demise".
A spokesperson for the family at the centre of the investigation simply said "what a bunch of idiots, they were pets".
Police are continuing their enquiries.
