An 80-year-old driver who accidentally dropped a load of money on to the road has blotted his previously unblemished driving record.
Gateshead magistrates heard that Ivor Lodesadosh, owner of the Big Game Casino, was driving to the bank in his jeep full of the day's takings when 25 big bags of cash fell out of the back. The car behind had to brake suddenly and a passenger suffered slight bruising.
Mr Lodesadosh admitted driving without knowing that it was illegal to drop large amounts of cash on to the road, especially near roundabouts.
Several other people were injured when crowds of passers-by fought amongst themselves whilst trying to clear up the mess.
A spokesman from the Department of Transport said that large bags of cash should be secured by safety belts. "So that in the event of a sudden collision, representations of the Queen's head will be protected from serious injury."
