BBC Director General George Entwhistle will appear before a house of commons select committee today to answer the charge that he suppressed the 'Newsnight' investigation into Jimmy Savile in order to save himself the hassle of re scheduling two tribute programs in the run up to Christmas 2011.
The irony is that the scandal has left the BBC with many holes in it schedule. An episode of crime drama 'New Tricks' was pulled because it was deemed sensitive as it dealt with child molestation. Because of this the production company Wall to Wall have terminated the agreement for the next two series. The unscreened episode will be in the DVD box set and will screen on Watch in the new year. The BBC will also lose the repeat run of the series.
Also so a Savile special could be slotted in an episode of 'Who Do You Think You Are?" was dropped another Wall to Wall production this time the DVD is already on sale and the next series has been pulled. "Bad Cop' had it's last episode dropped and the repeat run will be pulled. While Newsnight itself looks likely to be rested for reformating over the festive period.
Mr Entwhistle's time as Director General may well end up rivaling Andrew Mitchell's tenure as Chief Whip in terms of length and pointlessness.
