The former Olympic athlete has been recruited after the South African team have been boasting that one of their players, Bryan Habna, 23, could almost outrun a cheetah. Not to be outdone the England team were training with a Giant South African snail - all because the RSPCA declared hunting with wild animals to be illegal. The unfortunate mollusc had to endure suspected sabotage when a trail of salt was discovered in the snails' running track. It slowly melted in agony before being stamped on by a South African spectator.
Sir Menzies, cousin of Donald Campbell, four-time water speed record holder, said: "I am proud to be able to do something for my country and if we win, I shall be ecstatic. I am so confident of beating this fellow that I am prepared to give him a 20-yard head start. It would have been 50 yards, but as one get older, one slows up a little."
