Far-right author David Barton's book The Jefferson Lies is being pulled from bookstores all over the country for its inaccuracies and falsehoods. Let's examine some of the more dubious claims the book makes about our third president.
1) Sally Hemings was not a slave, but actually a live-in maid
2) Won Louisiana territory from Napoleon in a Bible-quoting contest
3) Invented Virginia
4) First person to sell tobacco with graphic warnings
5) Marched with Dr. King
6) Original copy of Declaration of Independence referred to the British as "gaylords"
7) Is on the quarter
8) Switched allegiance from the Democrat-Republican Party to the Republican-Republican party late in life.
9) This quote: "The government is best that governs least. But don't think that means you can't have an obscenely gigantic military budget, or the ability to monitor one of your citizens at any time without a warrant."
