Rachel Podger. Isn't that a brilliant name?
When I was a kid, my folks ran a shop in Garforth (near Leeds. Garforth's that place where the local football club has given Gazza a job). Round the corner was a pub called The Podger and that fascinated my mum.
(I say "was" but I just checked - it's still there. It has a web site)
Turns out a podger is a kind of big spanner. There's a ratchet ring podger and an open end cranked podger. Isn't that ace?
So anyway, I was hoping that this rather lovely Rachel wouldn't play these Bachs like a ruddy big spanner. Ha ha.
She doesn't.
Interesting point - the two "afters" are apparently transcriptions from harpsichord concertos "now lost" (according to the guy in BBC Music - they still won't let me write for them, Bastards).
