BAFTA Lifetime award winners Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders insisted yesterday that they were actually funny at some stage of their career.
An emotional Saunders said "I realise that we haven't really made people laugh for 20 years or so, but I think most people will admit that, back in the days of the Comic Strip, we did contribute towards the laughter even if it was in a small way."
Showbiz commentators believe that the pair, who are married to 'comedians' Lenny Henry and Ade Edmonson, have paved the way for other unfunny acts to win the prestigious award. One insider said: "We expect Mitchell and Webb to stand a great chance of picking up the award next year, although they may be run close by Canon and Ball or Keith Harris and Orville."
