Wonderful stuff. Talking about string (and why not?), there's a great Goon Show ('The Great String Robbery') episode where some string has been stolen. They find what's left of the string laid out as 2 pieces, with a gap between. At first they think the middle piece has been cut out and thus they are looking for that bit. But then when they move the 2 bits together, they notice that the 2 ends are closer together - the overall length is smaller. So then they realise that what must have happened is that the thieves cut off the 2 ends and cut the remaining piece in the middle and cunningly pulled the 2 pieces apart, to give the impression that ONE middle piece is missing, rather than TWO end pieces. But let me not stay you, for there is other lunacy abroad.
