Celtic Woman is coming to the area in November. Tickets will go on sale in September. My wife and I are going and are taking my parents (as an anniversary gift to them).

These women have the greatest voices in music today. They are magnificent. They blow away anyone from American Idol or any other reality show.

J-Man

Not familiar with Celtic Woman.

becca

Thanks for the kind remark.

Popular music:

All time favourite:

Marvin Gaye.

Was lucky enough to see him perform twice in Manchester at the ABC in Ardwick Green (now the Apollo) in 1976 and 1978.
Pure magic. If ever I feel down about things I always play the 'What's Goin' On' album. I don't know why, but it kind of gets my head in order.

Most Gifted Artist:

Stevie Wonder.

Ultra talented songwriter/musician/performer who would have easily won 20th Century's Most Talented had it not been for The Beatles.
Underrated singing voice, played all his own instruments, and can still sell out a 20,000 seat venue at the drop of a hat. In seconds.

Most Memorable:

Has to be The Beatles.

Beatlemania was something else. When they released Paperback Writer (not their best) I was on holiday in Margate, Kent, and everybody had their ear jammed to a radio. It seemed like every radio station in the world was playing that song.

Most Inspirational:

U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday

Especially the 'Live At Slane Castle' version.

'29 people - too many - no more!'

With respect to the Omagh bombing victims and their families. Being of Irish descent I applaud the statement that U2 make.

"We can be together tonight."

For fun:

James - Sit Down Live - G Mex Manchester

Much underrated, thought of in many quarters as a student band. Just listen to the singalong.

For Love

Gladys Knight - anything.

Being a bit of a rolling stone for quite a while, Midnight Train To Georgia and Baby Don't Change Your Mind strike a particularly resonant chord.

For Getting Married:

Having the wedding day dance with the love of your life to 'Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?' by Van Morrison brings a tear to the eye.

I tell her every day that I love her. I have done every day we've been together - she seems to prefer cream cakes.

For the kids:

Sarah - by Thin Lizzy.

Lynott being a dad. Nuff said. Shame he didn't live up to it but the emotion is undoubtedly there.

Christmas Song:

Kirsty McColl and The Pogues

Fairytale Of Manhattan.

Best Christmas song ever!

I'm gonna shut up now or I'll just keep twatting on until the sun rises.

I could have been someone- Skoob

Well so could anyone! - Mrs Skoob.

Goodnight from her and it's goodnight from all here.

(The cat's sitting staring up at me again)

Regards

Skoob.

Ever heard of Ronnie Milsap? Not quite as gifted as Stevie, but he's the country version - blind pianist, songwriter, performer.

People like you too SFO.

See how it pans out when you mellow a little?

Take Care Guy.

But don't go.

Be a man about it. Your contributions here are appreciated. You are a talented writer. Nobody means you any harm.

Just try to be friendly with people.

I guarantee you'll get the 'feel good' factor back quite rapidly.

More of the quality stories and less of the preaching please. If you want to sound off about something, then do it through your story-telling ability.

Look, you got me fucking preaching now!

I'm sure you get what I mean.

i discovered ronnie milsap at a particularly difficult time in my life; "It Was Almost Like A Song" and "What A Difference You've Made In My Life" both still have a huge emotional impact on me

are you are fan of freddie fender also? "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" and "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" are my favorites

and are you a selena fan as well? i adored her. she was killed 3 months before my son was. worst summer EVER.

we unknowingly stayed in the hotel room in corpus that selena was killed in for 3 weeks; they told us when we checked out that there was a waiting list for the room. gosh darned maid stole my $350 wilson leather black suede fringe jacket! i was SO pissed off!

i also neglected to include meatloaf on my list, one of the greatest voices of all time

I do like those two Freddie Fender songs. Horatio Sanz did a pretty good imitation of him on Saturday Night Live once.

I was unaware of Selena until just a few months before her death, and at the time, my musical mind was much more closed than it is now. I'm still pretty ignorant about her music.

What do you think of Shakira? Some of her stuff is a little radio friendly for my taste (she's got to get paid), but she's got an amazing voice (or more like 2 or 3 of them), she's smart, and she writes most of her own music and lyrics.

Hey Bureau

Wifey's a big jazz fan.

I'm a big Gil Scott-Heron fan.

He wrote a song about 'Lady Day' and 'John Coltrane' washing your troubles away. Amazing stuff.

Dylan?

Never really a fan, but loved 'Blowing In The Wind' 'The Times They Are A Changin' and 'Knockin On Heaven's Door'

Regards

Skoob.

i had only a passing interest in shakira; i felt "whenever, wherever" was truly unique. i loved her dancing, her sound and the fact she is a woman with curves, not a paris hilton stick figure clone. but she lost me with "la tortura"

on the other hand, i have yet to hear a song by selena i am not absolutely mesmerized by; she was poised to rule the charts when she was murdered.

Smurfette,

I gotta disagree on the whole Selena thing. I think that she became famous only because she died (killed by her former female manager/lover, but that fact seems to be forgotten). I don't think she would have ever been much more than a local sensation in South Texas if she had lived.

I was living in Laredo, Texas when she died (and the few years before that). I remember that she came to town and performed and was practically booed offstage one time, even though it was a big Tejano music town (and that's what she mostly sang). A few weeks later, she was dead.

Suddenly, the local newspaper is fawning all over the greatness of a singer that they had ripped on a short time before.

Businesses had these large sheets of butcher paper so that everyone could sign messages to Selena. Her records came off of the clearance bin at the music store and were suddenly best sellers.

I also met her father once in a hotel (I worked in their accounting department, he was meeting execs from Hollywood there). The guy was an oily slimeball who was there meeting with execs about selling her life story. He was making millions in profits off of the death of a daughter who had been estranged from him for several years.

Death is really good for business and your reputation.

yeah, just ask the michael jackson revisionists about that one.

joe jackson is the biggest jerk in the known universe and kat jack is behind him 1000% at her enabling best

and all those deluded fans trying to shove "saint michael" down our throats

gmafb!

but i actually was a selena fan before her death

and she was a huge INTERNATIONAL sensation; some artists (and prophets) don't receive the respect due them until after they die

and there is no accounting for local tastes

i much preferred my daughters listening to selena over broccoli (shudder) spears!

but, you are entitled to your opinion just as much as i am mine

You and you, and I am I

One of the best things Texas ever produced.

She won some music award a year or two ago that had never been given to a female, or an R&B artist - I remember Led Zeppelin was one of the bands who had also received it.

She was so humbled and just about to cry, but she's really got an incredible set of pipes. Her range is extraordinary, with only Mariah Carey clearly having a greater range, though less power.

Many of the songs they write for Beyonce are complete crap, but she usually manages to carry them anyway.

I don't know if Mathew Knowles is her dad or brother or what, but I believe he contributed greatly to Destiny's Child's sound on their 1st album - The Writing's On The Wall. Here's a track off that one that still gives me goosebumps sometimes called Confessions. I really like the descending scale thing she does at 3:01:

To quote J.P.McEnroe:

"You cannot be serious!"

But then that's music. One man's meat is another man's poison. That's partially what makes it so interesting. Mrs Skoob was a singer, and we argue all the time about music.

I think Beyonce looks absolutely drop-dead gorgeous, but I don't rate her at all as a singer.

Skoob.
