Rap has artists with integrity? On what planet?

Rhyming and spitting while singing about f-ing your whores and bitches and killing cops and whitey is not music. It is not art. It is not a medium performed by people of integrity. It is crap. It is demeaning to all women and anyone with any ethics or morals.

J-Man

You forgot to mention getting shot dead for wearing the wrong colour. In honour of your homies. Die like a hero in some stinking back alley or have your baby get shot in the crossfire when a bullet goes through the wall.

Hey! Let's mumble about it!

Let's call it 'rap'

Fucking great idea.

I'm with the J-Man on this.

Rap is absolute and utter shit.

Talentless fuckwits.

Things I hate:

Mobile (Cell) Phones. - They're killing the art of conversation and human interaction. Every time you go anywhere, people have a phone jammed to their ear, or they're sat somewhere intently studying it.

Skoob, isn't this one something of a contradiction? I mean, talking to each other on phones must surely increase human interaction through conversation. If you meant that, by 'texting', conversation is being killed, I'd agree with you, but mobile telephones have increased the number of conversations we have.

I still don't like them though. Silly fucking ringtones and all that. People also talk shite into them. Despite the fact that conversations have increased with the advent of mobile phones, so has the incidence of folks talking absolute shite to each other. And in the most conspicuous places, and at the most inconvenient times.

I don't want to hear what some knobjockey is having for his tea whilst I'm travelling home on the bus; I don't want to hear some freak tell his boyfriend he loves him whilst I'm at the cinema watching The Sound Of Music, especially that part where Julie Andrews takes her clothes off.

I agree with your other choices as well, Skoob.

They ought to make you the boss on here, like Jakki said.

Lawrence Krishna Parker (born August 20, 1965), better known by his stage name KRS-One, is an American MC and producer. Over his career, he has been known by several pseudonyms including "Kris Parker", "The Blastmaster", "The Teacha", and "The Philosopher". [2] At the 2008 BET Awards, KRS-One was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for all his work and effort towards the Stop the Violence Movement as well as the overall pioneering of hip-hop music and culture.

He was also a part of:

Boogie Down Productions
1988
"By All Means Necessary"

When some get together and think of Rap, they tend to think of violence
But when they are challenged on some Rock group, the result is always silence
Even before the Rock and Roll era, violence played a big part in music
It's all according to your meaning of violence and how or in which way you use it
No, it's not violent to show in movies the destruction of the human body (Think: Schwarzeneggar - sfo)
But yes, of course it's very violent to protect yourself at a party
And, oh no, it's not violent when under the Christmas tree is a look-alike gun
But, yes, of course it's violent to have an album like KRS-One
By all means necessary, it's time to end the hypocrisy
What I call violence, I can't do, but your kind of violence is stopping me
By all means necessary, the Rap audience must grow up
The same type of fighting we do, they do except we've got nothing to blow up
It doesn't matter if you win or lose, it's only how good you play the game
This is the oldest sneak attack, because it takes away our senses to gain
If all I do is play the game then I am just mediocre
We strive to be the best we can be, not to just get over
Some people say that life on a whole is serious and nothing is funny
But that's only if you base your life around competition and money
Yeah, I'm making some money, he's making some money, but none of these things are necessities
What I find to be a necessity is controlling a positive destiny
With this, money, fame, glory and credit will come in time
The people down with me know this; every minute they hear me sayin' rhymes
I got some friends, I got some allies like Stet (Stetsasonic - sfo), and Big Daddy Kane
They know, by all means necessary, that peace is the name of this game
Whether peace by war, or peace by peace, the reality of peace is scary
But we must get there, one way or another, by all means necessary.

I hate rappers who think they can act.

I guess the studio execs think they can act too, because at any given time there's a rapper starring in at least one movie showing at most theaters.

A few of them aren't awful, but the majority of them shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a camera.

I do like KRS-1, though. He's tame compared to most rappers. His lyrics aren't all about bitches and hos and Escalades.

Things I hate:

Scousers. (People from Liverpool) But only on matchdays. I've had some good mates from Liverpool, and met some nice people, but on matchdays the gloves come off and the demons come out to play.

Mobile (Cell) Phones. - They're killing the art of conversation and human interaction. Every time you go anywhere, people have a phone jammed to their ear, or they're sat somewhere intently studying it.

Social Climbers - People who aren't really worth shit, but like to think they're better than everybody else. Twats. Life lived on unsound credit - which is why we're in the shit we're currently in.

Workshy Single Mothers - who even though they have nothing to do, expect other people to do everything for them - and then complain that its not up to their high standards.

Punks who hang around the shops giving you lip as you pass. If you turn around and knock seven shades of shit of them for their insolence - you're the one who'll get busted.

Telesales people - there's a great item on you-tube about this where the guy answering the phone pretends to be a homicide detective at a murder scene. He starts to grill the telemarketer. It's hilarious.

There's more but I must go now.

Regards

Skoob.

That You Tube one is brilliant.

Things I hate

hospitals. Never liked them.

cottage cheese. If Satan ever invented a food, this is the one.

people who speak to foreigners as if they are stupid or deaf. I know an English teacher who does this to her students. By the third lesson her class size has diminished rapidly.

The BNP-just in case nobody noticed.

So, SFO...You a rap fan?

I am a fan of all kinds of music, literature, creative outlets and art forms in general.

I used to be a much bigger rap fan, but glorification of the thug stereotype doesn't appeal to me. The Harlem Renaissance was amazing, but what's going on in the Rap world today is no Harlem Renaissance.

Glorification of the thug lifestyle might sell records, but it is essentially doubly counterproductive.

1). The revenue generated by those records usually does not go back into the communities where those thugs came from (if they even really did). More likely, money leaves those communities to buy the album and enters a rich man's wallet.

2). Plus, now radio and TV stations are constantly bombarding everyone with negative racial stereotypes and making people like J-Man feel the way he does.

Much props to people like Dr. Dre for his talent. Trent Reznor even had him collaborate on a track once. Free speech is great, but I swear, if I hear another song about adultery, murder, violence, what's going down at the club, etc., I think I'm going to puke.

Sorry about that... you called it with the "long answer" thing.

P.S. British readers might get a kick out of knowing I am a Caron Wheeler fan - I loved the first Soul II Soul album, and UK Blak has several good tracks, especially the Jungle Brothers remix of Living In the Light.

Here's another nice track that didn't get near enough exposure in the states, just a little on BET:

You ever been to Harlem?

I have.

Walked the length of 125th from the Apollo to the subway at Lex with a view of the triborough bridge in the distance.

Not having a dig.

Just wondered.

You ever been to Harlem?

No, we were only in New York for a week. We did all the tourist-y stuff. At the Empire State Building, I did witness a couple of robberies in Harlem through those coin-operated view things on the 80-something floor.

We were in NYC less than 2 years before 9-11, so we were also able to visit the top of the World Trade Center and take photographs. Breathtaking views - I'm pretty sure I caught a glimpse of the U.K.

We also got to go up under the Statue of Liberty's dress and climb way up inside her, which I heard you can't do anymore.

SFO

Naw, that wasn't Lady Liberty. That was Rosie O'Donnell. You can't do that anymore since she became a dyke.

See, you can tell the difference because The Statue is a little skinnier and Rosie has darker hair.

SFO, I must have seen you up there, I was also there a couple of years before 911, strange coincidence, was it you with the dark blue suit on, or was it just the janitor?

A poignant whiff of sacre bleu francais onions was certainly hanging around at the time, I distinctly remember, or was it that onion pizza I had for lunch? Always leave my mark!

I'm no longer married, but I was there on my honeymoon. We actually looked more like janitors because we didn't want to draw attention to ourselves. We were in Tower II around the 14th or 15th of January 1999.

I thought they only served cheese pizza in NYC.

Can I offer you a breath mint?

Does it really matter? Why don't you go make up a story about her or something and leave me alone.

Your relentless attempts to distract me from my goals are becoming increasingly tiresome.

Rap has artists with integrity?

"People only think these are two different genres. But they're very much the same... Rap and hip-hop are about bringing people together to your neighborhood and talking about what happens there. Country music is about the same thing - writing about where you're from, ... You've got to respect (Toby), because he's selling a ton of records right now. It makes you want to learn more about his music." - Ludacris
