Paolo Gabriele, a reserved family man and devout Roman Catholic, worked in my private apartments in the Vatican's Apostolic palace, serving the my meals and helping me to dress.
He became disillusioned with his Church, according to an indictment issued Monday in which the Vatican ordered him to stand trial, along with another employee.
The indictment accused Mr. Gabriele of grand theft, a charge that could bring up to six years in jail, although I could pardon my once-trusted aide after any conviction.
