From the Guardian archive, 11 September 1953:

Mr Hugh Cudlipp referred to the occasion of a previous poll (1952) by the Sunday Pictorial on whether the Queen (then Princess Elizabeth) should marry the Duke of Edinburgh (then Prince Philip), Prince Philip had asked a friend what the result was as he would like to know.

It was 67% in favour.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...
