I have written to the president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales to distance myself from the claim that I considered the opponents of same-sex marriage to be "bigots".

I told Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster, and also Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, that the phrase was neither written nor approved by me.

Well, I don't want to lose anymore support do I?
