Lunch with friends turned out to be a lonely affair for me when I went on a final inspection tour of the Olympic village on Thursday.

While a few officials moved into apartments near the stadium, the bulk of the Games' 17,000 residents, from 203 countries, will arrive next week so the I was forced to tuck into lunch on me own.
