Museums are removing human skull and skeleton displays and covering up mummies for fear of insulting minority religious groups.
And now museum chiefs are warning that the institutions face complete closure as they will have nothing to show.
Protests by groups such as the Pagan Organisation Honouring the Ancient Dead have caused museums in London, Bristol and Manchester to cover up displays of ancient human remains.
But Dr Exeter McDoric of the Museum Curators' Institution said: "Where will it all end?
"Feminist groups protesting over paintings of nudes. Anti-capitalists being offended by displays of ancient coins. Animal rights groups attacking natural history cabinets.
"Modern Luddiites could be offended by scientific displays and groups ashamed of our past could shut down galleries showing the history of things like the British Empire, the Royal Navy and so on.
"We could soon be without a museum industry at all."
