A UK grandma was presented with the 'Good Household' twin knitting and spaghetti-craft awards today, by creating the world's first edible sweater.
Elsie Batty-Edwards from Cardigan, North Wales said that she'd first learnt to finger-knit in her dad's allotment, back in the 1940s. "I started off with runner beanstalks and swiftly moved onto garden string," she said.
"Just after the war, real wool was scarce, so I used army bootlaces, old unraveled socks… anything I could find. Of course, by the 1950s, fashions were flamboyant and we'd never had it so good."
Elsie knitted everything from swimming suits to tabletops - even an entire family scene as part of the 1958 Knitting World exhibition: Mum, Dad, Sister, Brother and dog. In the 1960s, she tried her hand at licorice and became the brains behind 'Wooller's mini-knitted treats'.
It made her a fortune, but Elsie says that the craft comes first. And so now, as part of a health eating campaign, her edible cardigan designs will be used to advertise fresh pasta.
What a lot of noodles!
