Hells Kitchen, Upper West Side, New York - (Rotters): Restaurant staff at a chain of eateries part-owned by Hollywood actor Robert de Niro have downed tools and branded their boss a bad-assed mean tipper who has pocketed all their hard-earned gratuities and spent them on frippery.
Over 100 employees have backed two former waiters at the New York branch of Nobu in a lawsuit for the return of over $1 million in pilfered tips.
They are suing on behalf pf staff at Nobu Corp's downtown Manhattan businesses, Nobu and Nobu Next Door as well as its midtown location, Nobu 57.
"When he comes in to eat at Nobu he never, ever leaves a tip," one Nobu ex-head waiter complained today, "and is always moaning how he should be eating for free just because he owns a slice."
Another staff members from Nobu Next Door said De Niro had a terrible reputation for meanness, petulence, flatulence, whinging on and on about perfectly good 'corked' wine and the fact that no body ever seemed to recognise him.
There has been no response yet from the movie star but his lawyers issued a statement today saying their client was bound to contest the action 'vigorously'.
