26 December, when they hunt a fake wren and put it on top of a decorated pole.

"What larks eh Pip?"

Wrens, actually, Joe, fake wrens.

If there are more than one bird atop the pole, does that make it Wrens Day?

I think it makes Peter Stringfellow's day.

Travellers (Tinkers)still do this on the 26th, St Stephens day, over here, also some groups down in Kerry keep the ritual alive mainly to keep the tourists entertained.

Around the rest of the country the Travellers just use it as an excuse to march into the pubs and demand money from people under the guise of tradition.

Yes, it's two days before Thrush day.

Sadly, since the wren is in decline, I hardly think pole-overcrowding would be an issue.

I know what you're thinking, and my answer is that I understand that there is a shortage of fake wrens too.

A surfeit of wrenless poles is more likely to challenge us.
