The Mexican Ambassador to the UK has criticised BBC show Top Gear for a series of "outrageous, vulgar and inexcusable insults".
.......................... In the episode, which can be watched on iPlayer, Hammond joked that Mexican cars reflected national characteristics, saying they were "just going to be lazy, feckless, flatulent oaf with a moustache, leaning against a fence asleep, looking at a cactus with a blanket with a hole in the middle on as a coat" Damned Meskins! MY TAKE on it |

Didn't see the show but - just a comment from me - I worked on Ginseng Farms in Southern Ontario with Mexian 'itinerant' workers and some workers from Barbados and Quebec.
Tell you what....the Mexican workers on the farms where I live (and worked one season) are bloody 'hardworkers' - the best. Mind you....I don't know what they get up to when back in Mexico. Nothing to do with article...but.....there you go. LG |

I'm still a big fan of the show, (The BBC-America episodes are delayed a bit from initial UK release) but the boys do tend to take nationalistic pride a bit far from time to time for the sake of a laugh, when comparing themselves to the worst cultural aspects of a country, the U.S. being one of their favorite targets (next to Italian Alpha Romeo design engineers).
Ah well. I'm still a fan of the Hamster, blue collar dog that he is, tolerate Captain Slow, but not quite sure about that tall nappy wool headed fellow who seems quite negative about everything. Still, liked your story. Hope the weather is holding out for the Isles. Plowed out 5 foot drifts this morning to get the car out of the driveway......... PM |

I forgot to add that I love the show too and watch it on BBC America.
(Snow's not THAT high here yet...but still falling and drifting.) LG |

Took a peek at the national radar map and for some reason, this moisture generator missed most of central Canada. Looks like southern Ontario might get pounded a bit... Hope all is well in your neck of the Great White North. Shovels Up! Ready... GO! PM |

Someone used this example in our debate about freedom of speech (you know, the one you exercise on this very site?), in conjunction with a comedian and that andy gray incident.
The question was "Should there be boundaries on f.o.s?" Well... evidence is right here. |

You'd have to be an idiot to take stereotypes seriously.
Problem is, we're all idiots from time to time. Some are idiots all of the time. That's why we have to have these ludicrous societies and laws and stuff. Shame really. |

Is the Mexican stereotype humourless?
Fast getting impatient with people who get offended by any sort of humour. I suppose Clarkson will have to have a warning paragraph perhaps from now on like they do on those films 'Warning Mild Peril' 'Warning some scenes of a sexual nature' 'Warning some scene may frighten sensitive people' (That on an animal documentary) On the Swedish Wallander series they even said 'Subtitles - beware strong language' At least they still put in the naughty words so nobody could accuse them of being prudish or 'not true to the original script.' For Clarkson mybe 'Warning: mild absurdities, humour and bigotry may offend almost anyone who chooses to be offended - our overall meassage to those is bollocks to them' |

Yes the key to Clarkson and co is to realise that they are comedians.
He is an entertainer. |

Personally I think Clarkson is a smug prick. And not even remotely funny. If he's a comedian, I'll beef hooked.

Yeah but the point is he's an entertainer not a serious journalist whatever that is.
Not whether you like him or not. Not to be taken seriously. But cos he is, that's why we have to have all these rules etc. It all seems so bleedin futile. |
