I don't understand it at all.

What's it all about?

What's so controversial/interesting/remarkable about Susan Boyle?

Or is that the point?

A daft ITV/Simon Cowell promotion for the moron masses. Ugly fat woman getting attention like she was, er, Marilyn. Or Jackie.

Yes I see that.

But it's like...then what? Why so huge (no punintended)?

But maybe the daftness of it all is the point.

Just that a lot of the stories on here seem more like tributes than spoofs.

Still, each to their own!

not a lot to it really its just that lots of people out there identify with a fat ugly woman, who defied peopel's first impressions of her. It goes deep in people there are thousands out there screaming inside 'I am not what you think I am' who never have much chance to prove it. She's their icon.

Subo on the spoof? well she gets reads and is always good when you can't think of owt else to write.

btw - meanwhile go read PP Rega's stuff it is right up your street. I just discovered him/her to my shame which shows I don't read half enough on here.

I'm a fan. She's hilarious, down to earth. Have any of you actually listened to her voice-singing, then watched her in an interview? She is amazing. Two different characters in one.

Yes - I spoof her, but mainly the rich American women and some men who seem to be IN LOVE with the woman. Now THAT'S GOING OVERBOARD and they're what keeps the whole 'thing' going for ME.

You call her fat and ugly? Christ I'm glad you can't see ME

Most of the spoofs I've read are satirizing or spoofing not Susan herself but the nuttier element among her fans. Plenty of material, there, even more so than in fandoms in general. As for the appeal of Susan Boyle, some people like her voice, and some of us like her crazy spirited personality, even though SyCo seems determinzed to bowdlerize her into an airbrushed Church Lady who never drops a four-letter word.

For me, her eccentricity was half of the appeal. I'm not happy with what SyCo is doing to her. Not surprised, mind you, just not happy.

There's also the whole "it's never too late to go after your dream" aspect which appeals to just about anybody who hasn't gone completely sour on hope and dreams. It might especially resonate with American culture, but I don't think it's limited to American culture, by any means. People like a good old-fashioned rags-to-riches talent-hidden-by-the-cinders-in-the-hearth story.

And what's fat (or skinny) got to do with singing? Jesus. Elton John's always been at least a little fat--and now he's more than a little fat--but I've been to several of his concerts, and watched many more online, and in my book, at least, he's one hell of a performer. Musically, I mean. You'll have to ask David Furnish about the other side of performance.

Anyway, the question, "What's the big deal about Susan Boyle?" could just as well be asked about any other singer or celebrity. Different people find different voices, styles, and personalities appealing. Live and let live, and revel in the batshit insanity that is the human condition.

Awwww, Lady Godiva, I've seen photos of you, and you are not at all ugly. I'm not going to lie and call you skinny, but you have a very pleasant, charming, grandmotherly demeanor about you, not to mention a streak of mischief reflected in that seemingly innocent gaze...

While I'm no psychic, I'm also gonna guess that people who spend a lot of time sitting at the computer reading and writing are probably not the skinniest people on Planet Earth, either. Just a guess, mind you.

Maybe that's it.

Maybe if I was happy to spend more time at the computer getting fat, and less time swimming or hiking, I could be the Susan Boyle of unpaid obscure writers.

Or something.

You cannot spoof subo herself and feel clean afterwards so I've tried where possible to invent situations where I can. These although about her are sort of remote from her and hopefully generalisations of a sort. Also if they are made really outrageous then they can't be offensive because they are so absurd (like when she supposedly 'ran amok' on a plane) Most of the time though I think if we aren't satirising the people involved we are satiirizing their fans just by attracting them here.

Indeed I find it difficult to spoof people I quite admire and who just by their very existence reveal people like Simon Cowell and the production companies 9and some people in her first audience who betrayed their prejudice by their looks of surprise) for the cynical money-grabbing bastards they are.

Admire perhaps but not really a fan but her voice is really not bad.

Syco and SC himself keep away from kids have you noticed that the little girl who sang so well ' somewhere over the rainbow' they didn't touchb Now she's rakig it in with her mum and dad as her managers because she is hot stuff in the far East. Love that.

Write a spoof about Brett Favre. I just posted one today that's getting a fair number of hits right now.

And I don't think he can even sing.

I'd love the writers here, who have not read, (most defintely all except 5 or 6 of us), about Dyebat's adventure in Japan, in her own words, to read this epic account of an innocent abroad. It's funny, scary, sad, naive and heartwarming at the same time, but with a very happy ending.

Susan gave her hope and the courage to do that trip, alone, from the US. The thought of that lady, sitting, alone on a railway platform all night, in a strange land, still sends shivers of fear up my spine.

After Lynton's post, I have to ask, AR, didn't you feel a bit dirty after writing about Favre?

What do you mean, La Charpacabra? It was a VERY clean article!
