Just a thought.

As a young whippersnapper, I was blessed to have seen Best, Charlton, Law, Crerand etc on a regular basis.

I wasn't an infrequent visitor to the noisy neighbours either, although always a red. I saw the great City team of the late sixties (RIP Big Mal by the way) Lee, Bell, Summerbee, Book, and me old fave Mike Doyle (bastard)

Jimmy Greaves, Dave McKay, Alex Young, Roger Hunt, Joe Royle, Howard Kendall, Emlyn Hughes, Kevin Keegan, Toshack, Alan Ball, Gordon Banks, Pat Jennings, Peter Shilton, and a bit more recently, Ryan Giggs, Cantona, Mark Hughes, and back to Kenny Dalglish.

Platini, Boniek, Paulo Rossi, Guardiola, Rivaldo.

Actually saw all these and more.

Anyone?

Regards

Skoob of the Stretford Paddock. (But not K Stand - I was never really a naughty boy.)

I saw many of them too, Skoob.
On the telly.

I saw Baggio playing for real though.

That's it.

Maybe I should open my eyes more.

I stood next to Roy Keene in the sandwich shop. I worked with Steven Gerrard's cousin and met him at a Christmas do.

Paul Scholes's son plays for Stalybridge Celtic juniors, so I've met him a few times, and Dennis Irwin managed them for a while, so I saw him a couple of times too.

I've never consciously met a City player.

My Brother-in-law, Dave, was on a plane coming back from Germany, and there were three City players and Tevez, before he was a City player (obviously knew something the rest of us didn't). Dave is a big city fan and got the autographs of the three city players, but when Tevez held his hand out for the pen, he was snubbed by Dave.

Ironically, Tevez became a city player and the other three left.

I have met loads of footballers, but they've all been Celtic players (and not the Glaswegian variety) so you won't have heard of any of them.

Rob McDonald used to come to Wold Road Play Centre and give us a few skill tips.

And Billy Whitehurst was a semi-regular golfer at 'Royal Springhead'. He once attacked a greenkeeper with his driver.

Plus, Darren France grew up with us playing football at park, and went on to play for the Tigers.

Ah they don't get much better than the Pompey team of the early 70s - Johnny Milkins, Ray Crawford, Nicky Jennings, Ray Hiron, Alby McCann et al. Great days!

Ah, yes! I saw this lot as well. Wasn't it Ron Hiron?

I could be wrong. They beat the Tigers 5-1 at Boothferry Park circa 1971. The great Stuart Pearson got City's consolation, I think.

By the cringe! You remember 'em too!

I've just checked me copy of Pompey Players 1920-2001 (Roger Holmes, 2001 - Bishops Printers) and it was definitely Ray Hiron.

72/73 was the year of that result according to the Official Centenery Pictorial History (1998 Jeffs, Farmery Owen)

OK, I'll bow to the book.

And all of these years, I've been thinking it was Ron.

It may have been the striking all-blue kit, but that forward line seemed huge.

Actually, Ellis, I'm talking shite.
I've just checked my own source, Hull City: A Complete Record 1904-1989 by Chris Elton (Breedon Books 1989), and the match I am talking about, was Hull City 1 Portsmouth 3, and took place on September 18 1971. Pearson did, indeed, score our goal.

The very next season, we avenged that tragic defeat by trouncing you 5-1 at Boot Park on October 14 1972. Pearson scored 4 goals that day in front of 9,513 fans.

Yes, that's right. Now I remember...

I wasn't talking about meeting them face to face, for a chat like. Just saw 'em playing in the ground.

I have met Paddy Crerand, George Best, Denis Law and Leighton James and a few others.

Nothing controversial to report.

All perfect gents.

Saw Francesco Totti play in Rome against Arsenal in a CL game when we were on holiday. That guy is a god in Rome. Probably more revered than the Pope.

Mrs Shuttlecock and I sat with the Roma fans. Right by the Sud Curve. Amazing experience.

(Whatever you do, don't tell Fergus about this because Thierry Henry scored a hat trick (wanker) and Arsenal won 3-1)

Skoob.

It is my great honour to not watch Premiership football...to me it's more like ballet than football. Give me grass roots any day.
