Any of you lovely people boxing fans?

I used to watch it all the time, but I've lost track a bit these days.

My faves were the Middleweights.

I thought Marvin Hagler was a great fighter.

Any thoughts?

Regards

Skoob.

CJ - We may as well have met up for a pint today.

Wife's at work, and it appears there's only yourself, Matt and me here.

I'm putting UK Gold on the telly.

Victor Mildew - he'll cheer me up.

Sugar Ray Leonard was the hardest pound for pound puncher I ever saw.

Favourite fight - the Rumble In The Jungle.

I watched it on TV. I was rooting for Ali, and just like Angelo Dundee and Drew Bundini Brown, I thought he was committing suicide out there with Foreman. I couldn't believe the way he handled the fight. I was shouting at the TV "Get off the fucking ropes!"

We all know how that one turned out.

Ali was amazing.

He would have destroyed Tyson.

Just sayin'

You speak with boxing wisdom Skoobie..

I too love the middle-weights. But Muhammad Ali was always my favourite. Everyone's favourite. Nothing will ever compare.

Thing that non-boxing lovers don't appreciate .. was the man's footwork.

The shuffle wasn't just pretty..

Ali always boxed 'moving backwards'. Which meant he always delivered his punches onto an opponent moving forwards..

That's how he beat up so many great boxers. Punching his own weight - plus theirs...

Blood everywhere...

Just sayin..

...like Skoob lost interest over the years as the story lines became jaded, and the boxers turned to crap...liked the middleweights as well, but here's a guy you should have seen; Archie Moore, the Mongose!
I cut this from his bio...I watched this fight with Durelle on television...never saw anything like it....better than Rockie...and if you reflect on it now, probably where Sly got the idea:

"Archie went back to defending his light heavyweight crown stopping the highly regarded Tony Anthony in seven rounds. Moore continued to meet heavyweights in hope of securing one more shot at that title. Archie defeated Howard King twice, Roger Rischer, Willi Besmanoff and Charley Norkus before putting his title on the line. Moore's 1958 bout with Canada'sYvon Durelle secured Archie's place in fistic history. Repeatedly knocked down in the early rounds and then down again in the fifth, Moore refused to surrender. By the middle rounds Durelle began to tire. Archie came on to stop Durelle in the eleventh round to retain his title in a classic thriller.

Classic My ASS...IT WAS THE BEST FIGHT FOR GUTS, COURAGE, & CHARACTER I'VE EVER SEEN.....catch it if you have a chance.....

Yeah, he really was The Greatest.

I was almost moved to tears when I watched his last ever fight against Larry Holmes. Not sure if you're aware but Larry was his long time sparring partner.

Larry could have hurt Ali badly in that fight, but he just threw glancing blows. An ignominious end for Ali, but I prefer to remember the glory days - Norton, Frazier, Foreman, Quarry, Cooper - hell, there were at least ten heavyweights from that era who would have been champions at any other time. Ali whupped them all.

You're bang on about the footwork of course, but with all due respect, the main thing with Ali was his heart, his determination, his steadfast refusal to countenance defeat - even if he died trying.

Better men than I ran out of superlatives long ago trying to describe Ali.

I'm just priveleged to have been able to appreciate that zenith of heavyweight boxing. There was nothing comparable before, and there never will be again. At least not in my lifetime.

The comparisons between Ali fighting Tyson, or Marciano will always be academic. But I think he'd have comfortably beaten the pair of them. He beat guys like Frazier, who had a similar style. The only guy he really ever appeared to struggle against was Ken Norton.

In the modern era, I think only Lennox Lewis could have tested him. And for what it's worth, I think Ali in his prime would have beaten him too.

Archie was a little before my time, but I've seen the tapes. A gutsy, mightily impressive fighter.

He was in Foreman's corner in the rumble in the jungle. He told Ali that Foreman would kill him, dismissed Ali as being too old.

If you watch the footage carefully, when Ali puts Killer George on his arse, he turns to Foreman's corner and shouts "Who's too old now Archie? I told you. I told you."

Taking nothing away from Archie Moore. A fine champion and by all accounts a gentleman.

Thomas 'The Hit Man' Hearns - he was good.

Skoob.

I had alot of respect for Marvin Hagler....no one would fight him, or he would have been on top long before he was....tough dude with a wicked punch....

T Hearns was a wild man....looked like he was methed up when he got in the ring.....had about a 109" reach....tough to buy ready made shirts....!

Hearns had massive shoulders too. He could hit, and hit hard. Only two people got the better of him, Leonard and Hagler.

The Hagler/Hearns fight was a classic. Short but brilliant.

Documented fact - more punches thrown than in any other title fight over the same duration.

Hagler was a monster. In a nice way. He'd won 49 fights before he got his title shot against Minter. Because he wouldn't play the Don King game.

Don King was an absolute disgrace.

When Tim Witherspoon fought Frank Bruno at Wembley for the title, he cleared less than $2,000

Hagler later bought a vacation home in North Conway, NH, where I lived at one time....Not only was he the only boxer there, he was the only Black Man...
they don't call it The White Mountains for Nothing...

He was a gentleman with Principles and Character....sorely missed today!

Wasn't he originally from your neck of the woods?

Newark, New Jersey?

Then he moved to Mass.

That man could swing.

Not only that, from all I've ever heard he is a man of unshakable principle.

Just imagine, Marvin Hagler, banging his gloves, coming out of his corner right at you. Head down. Shoulders rolling. Eyes focused. Meaning to knock your block off...

I'd be on the first fucking bus out of town before he got his arse off the stool.

When he beat John 'The Beast' Mugabe, people said he'd lost his heart. Hagler just said: "Nah. I just did what I had to do."

I just hope he never gets pissed off with me.

Nah.. won't happen

Don't often see you on mine.

So Skoob, what's your take on the Haye v Harrison 'handbags at dawn' fiasco?

I reckon Haye should marmelise the twat in less than five.

Though I don't usually watch a lot of boxing, a bunch of us Americans chipped in for Pay Per View, got drunk and watched the fight where Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield's ear, then bit him a second time when the fight inexplicably continued after he was given a two point deduction for the first chomp.

WTF?

Saw that fight live.

Ouch!

Evander had a heart murmer and the only place they'd grant him a boxing license was Nevada. Brave as hell. Deservedly held in the highest esteem by afficionados. Not such a big guy either. Started off as a Cruiserweight if memory serves.

Joe Calzaghe - now there's a name to conjure with. Probably the most underrated fighter of the modern era. A true champion.

Jammy bastard Joe..

Have you seen that Russian dance..

Seen the way Rihanoff moves??

Wonder how she'd respond to a straight jab.

Is it Valuev?

He's a big bastard.

Too clunky though.

I reckon me and CJ would knock him out.

Take the two of us though. And we'd need baseball bats.

But we'd 'ave him. Eventually.

Don't bother me now, I've just looked her up on Google Image, I'm disabling the "safe search".... now.

Wish me luck.
