Just a follow on to one I just read of birbee's.

Hitch hiking.

I'll share some of my experiences with you:

Bad Ones

I once had a lady doctor who picked me up grab my wrist and tell me how beautiful my watch was. It wasn't beautiful at all - it was just a crap two-bob watch. Erm, drop me off here please. You could be trouble.

White van driver on the M1 - took me into a truckers cafe at the services near Sheffield. All the others appeared to be sniggering. Got back in the van and there was a paper bag on the dash with polaroids in it. Guy got off on taking pics of other blokes bonking his Mrs. Erm, drop me off here mate.

Lorry driver, M6 - dropped me in Preston and insisted on buying me a pint in a fun pub. Turned out he was a bit of a Jeremy and wanted me to sleep in his cab overnight with him. Erm - like, thanks but no thanks. I'll walk the rest of the way, and if you insist on being a pain I'll give you a Salford slap.

Good Ones

A pretty young lady who insisted on buying me breakfast and lunch on the M1. Asked me for my address and phone number. Turned out she'd gone about 150 miles out of her way because she liked me. Never saw her again but she was cute.

Guy picked me up on the M62 after I'd slept rough at Hartshead Moor services. He was going to South Manchester. He went out of his way for me and dropped me off on Chester Road near Old Trafford. No ulterior motive, just a nice bloke who said I looked so knackered he just wanted to help me out. That was much appreciated.

Two Irish traveller lads in a beamer who picked me up on the M27 just after Christmas when I'd come south to see my kids. I left with 30p in my pocket. It was freezing cold. These guys took me up the M3 to the M25 and dropped me off at Egham. As I got out of the car and walked up the hard shoulder by the M25 interchange, the driver pulled up beside me again, gave me a fistful of cigarettes and a ten pound note. Wished me happy christmas. That restored my faith in humanity I can tell you.

Strangest Lifts

A mobile library between Stamford and Bourne in Lincolnshire.

A JCB on Accrington Road in Burnley one Sunday morning. Piloted by a mad Irish bloke.

A Hell's Angel on a tricycle chopper thing at Salmesbury just outside Preston, who looked straight out of a California biker movie - complete with German helmet - but spoke in a broad Blackburn accent.

There's more. Maybe another time.

Regards

Skoob.

Probably don't believe me, but in my "hippie" days, my girl friend and I hitchhiked a few times. Had a couple hairy experiences, but some really cool ones too. Back then, living in south Florida, I can't say it was absolutely safe, but I can say a right goodly number of people were doing it.

Came down to using gas money for cheap wine or the bus. Had to get down to the Florida Keys somehow.

but that's for another time.

I once thought it would be a good idea to hitch home after a works 'do'.

Trouble was it was about half past one in the morning, it was in the middle of rural Somerset and I was very pissed.

Needless to say the odd car that did pass me nearly inadvertantly gave me a lift (on their bonnet as they tried to swerve around me) and I ended up walking all the way home.

It was about a three mile walk but I probably covered about eight.............

Prom night, the golf course, the sand trap....it was painful!

Was that you we picked up going to Holiday Isle for snorkeling and you practiced on the way down?

Well...maybe not...this was back in 1959.....what did you grandmother look like then????

Nope, don't believe we were looking for golfers at the time. Best we could hope for is a pup tent in a state park.
