I went up the shop today and spent £13.12 on various odds and sods (mainly beer)

When the guy on the till - who was obviously working his arse off as it was really busy - rang up my purchases and handed me my change, I put it in my pocket and headed for the door. Then something prompted me to check it - he'd given me £16.88 in change - £10.00 too much. (I'd paid with a twenty.)

I about turned, went back to the counter and gave him the £10 back, explaining his error. The guy looked at me as if he expected a cloud to open up and send down a ray of light from God, like in the Blues Brothers.

I couldn't have walked away with that £10 on principle. What if they'd docked it from the guy's wages? Having said that, maybe he should have been more careful.

Did I do the right thing in returning the money?

Regards

Skoob.

You did the right thing Skoob.
If the guy was busy serving at made a genuine mistake, you did the right thing.

I was in Tesco the other day and went to buy some tobacco at the booth thingy.
The two women who were working were constantly chatting to each other whilst serving, not paying any attention to the customers.
The woman who served me gave me £10 too much change but I figured that if she wasn't chatting to her mate and paying more attention then she wouldn't have made the mistake.

So I kept it............

I don't know about the "right" thing, but you certainly did the honorable thing.

A few years ago, the same thing happened to me. I give the guy a 10-spot, and he gives it right back to me with a five and a couple of ones.

I was at a bakery thrift shop buying discounted bread, and I needed the money. I was actually thankful that it happened. What can I say?

On the other hand, I had to pay for a 5$ register shortage when I was much younger, which taught me a valuable lesson. My register is never short anymore ... at least when there's nobody in it but me. Grrrrr!!

At any rate, you have proven yourself once more to be a fine, upstanding citizen, Skoob.

Can you loan me ten bucks?

If you'd asked me that question two months back, the answer would have been yes. Without hesitation. Thing is, I've been off work sick and the bank balance has taken a bit of a kicking.

So, SFO - you send me five and we'll call it a deal.

Kindest

Skoob.

You did the right thing! Mind you, I was in a pickle when I took my students on the year end trip. Peter put a $5 bill in a machine for a bottle of Coca Cola costing $l.25 and the MACHINE gave him change for a $10 bill. I was in a difficult position but explained to Peter that we couldn't really give it back to the machine.

Thinking about how 'needy' Peter and his family are...and thinking of how RICH the owners of Coca Cola are etc. I told him he was 'lucky' and left the machine with a clear conscience and a very happy 9 year old.

Well...what else could I have done under the circumstances??
I suppose I COULD have tracked down the Admin. office (wherever that was in The African Lion Safari Park) and got Peter to hand over the $5 - which would most likely have been 'pocketed' by the person he handed it to?
