Just heard that Alex died today.

When he was in his heyday, there were all kinds of stories circulating about his behaviour.

He used to use the same club as me - usually early on a Friday or Saturday evening. He'd give the lads off the club snooker team tips.

Used to come in with his girlfriend - who he went on to marry and have a daughter with.

You'd hear stories about the hell raising antics, but I never personally witnessed any of that. The Alex Higgins I remember was always the perfect gentleman. Even when provoked.

Not every day you can go down your local and see a world champion demonstrate his craft. For free.

Just thought I'd say that.

RIP Alex.

Skoob.

Nice of you to say a few words. Sure if he knew, he'd appreciate it.

I met him a few times in the wandsworth snooker club, he used to fleece the chinese gangsters. Jimmy White and his brother played with Alex and the chinese would bet £20 a point who would win. Many a time I had to crack a head or two when the chinks lost all their money.

Never witnessed any wild antics from Alex though.
Jimmy and his brother yes. good times!

RIP Alex.

That awful pic of him in the papers today makes him look like one of 'Bill & Ben the Flower Pot Men' (from the 60s show Watch With Mother)...

Bill/Ben from the Flowerpot Men

Alex Higgins

Terrible cocaine habit lead him astray into bad company.

And a shocking booze problem - mostly when sober and trying to stay on the wagon.

He was also involved in a horseracing scam in the 1980s - a handicapper 8 furlong specialist called Duffers Dancer.

A syndicate that owned the nag was done for corruption, moneylaundering and various Kray Twins-like activities around London.

Higgins had to hide out for several months when the case went to the Old Bailey.

Still, he played some awesome snooker when top of his form.

Pity he couldn't keep it up without the demon drink inside him.
