A dub is a pool in our dialect.

But here it's

Dub

Proper reggae dub is marvellous. Not so sure about the more recent uses of the term.

Not just that. Doesn't have to include toasting.

I thought Arm had it right, good example too, though I think we will have to skip the music in this case.

Television preachers from Africa and the Carribean sound similar to me, I was hoping for a big heap of silly.

If you listen to Linton it can easily be Newfie, bye, just throw some codfish and lobsters in, I think you know the routine. Newfie rap.

That would be a great dub poem.

Game on.

Thing is and ironic it is too is that LKJ actually puts on his accent! He speaks normally like we all do.

Also our rapper friends think what they have, they invented!!

Well I suppose for that matter the talking blues could be classed a s dub too but in a different style and that was earlier still

Gil Scott heron seems to have sold out a bit to the jazz genre and unlike a lot of dub poets he can sing - I sort of class the universality and popularity of the dub style as being because anyone can do it if they have rhythm as poets do but cant actually sing or hold a note.

It blends into all sorts of genres such as performance poetry which is similar but without the music but does rely very much on rhythm, assonance and the alliterative quality and choice of words.

If we could agree on a definition vic it would help immensely and if we widen it a bit it could embrace more people who feel less confident with the current stuff - such as Lady G.

We should also try not to make it too much of a piss-take either becasue it could be seen as being deliberately racist - not that I care I'm a great fan of Ali G and he does a double Lampoon of white and black.

Oh and Vic I'm going to try not to skip the music - I'm working on it

I can't believe that you guys have heard of Gil Scott Heron!

Fuck me, it's a small world.

Some of my favourites:

'Home Is Where The Hatred Is'

'Lady Day And John Coltraine'

'In The Bottle'

Bloody hell...I'm gobsmacked....for once...

Circle up the wagons to defend yourselves against nuclear attack.

Fucking hell....

Regards, in shock and awe

Skoob.

No need to define things too much, whatever floats your boat, these things are better when they move laterally sometimes.

Well, I am only slightly awake, it's 8:32 am here and I didn't sleep well.

Thanks Lynton:

Listening to the talking blues set me thinking about the Canadian soldiers I met in 'hospital' last year after they had experienced Afghanistan. PTSD is rampant. I only met the soldiers who sought help. There must be hundreds more than are 'shown' in statistics.

Back to the topic...I can't compete with the 'dubbers' but would really like a poetry/rhyming thread....Poems could be serious - on topics close to our hearts - or 'silly' to lighten our hearts.

Don't tell me we all are not 'suffering' in some shape or form!!! We are all HERE aren't we?????
