The title says it all.
Or not.

Well, it says something.
It says "WORLD CUP FOOTBALLERS DISCUSSION".

And this is what this thread is for: Discussing WORLD CUP FOOTBALLERS.

England's best player has been Ashley Cole. Everyone else has been shit.

Players I've been most impressed with are Landon Donovan for USA, Sanchez for Chile, Ozil -the little bug-eyed chap for Germany, and several of Argentina's players.

I've liked Landon Donovan since I first saw him in the World Cup a few years ago - when he had a bit more fluffy hair. The entire US team as a whole are really strong and work hard for each other despite playing nearly everything down the middle.

Muller for Germany has been a real surprise as he was shit for Bayern during Champions League.

The most disappointing players so far?
Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard are awful. Made zero impact.

Torres for Spain has been a disaster.

DeMichaelis for Argentina (despite getting goal last night) is a bit of a joke defender. It's all comedy capers with him.

Anyone else seen anyone that tickles their fancy/makes them want to throw remote at telly?
Monkey? Skoob? Jaggedone? Fergus? Queenie Weeny? Duncan?

Anyone?

Gazza?

David James.

Proper goalie, absolutely no complaints about his performance so far.

Today's England/Slovenia ref was a bastard, that yellow card he gave Johnson (?) was a travesty.

Bring back Pier Luigi Colina, I say.

Outstanding?

Nobody really.

Difference between being committed and outstanding.

Ashley Cole has been great, but with a question like this you have to look at match winners.

Only one for me - Messi. He hasn't scored yet but he's set a few up. He's the top boy.

So far.

One of Diego the chimp's boys.

I don't usually think of James as a particularly good goalie, but at least he catches it, unlike some of these blokes who think punching it away at an angle is safer. The best goalie I've seen has gone home: the guy for Nigeria. Without him, the Argentina v. Nigeria game would have been a cricket score.

We don't have the benefit of an English commentary, QM, but it looked to me liked he booked him for 'trying to influence the ref', by falling (and grimacing) when in the penalty area, which he did. To be honest, when I see players from other teams do this, (even in the Premier League) I fume, and feel they should not only be booked, but also sent off, and probably receive a 10-match ban. Let's face it, it's cheating. I don't like the way (again, in the PL), people like Lampard and Gerrard leave that back leg trailing in order to gain a penalty. You can clearly see the straightening and tensing of the leg, in the expectation that there will be the faintest of contact. I hate it, and feel that any player that does it deserves to be held up as an example and thrown out of the game.

Kojak? No arguments there. He wouldn't have stood for any cheating.

I agree with the trailing leg statement totally. On this occasion QM is correct. Johnson's booking was outrageous. I don't know how many replays you get over there, but Johnson took a hefty whack in the back from an elbow which knocked him off balance leading to him going down. It wasn't to do with feet or trailing legs.

Slovenia were the same against the USA in their group game - very handy with the elbows and holding. They all hold and pull shirts at corners but Slovenia took it to a whole new level.

Just saying.

OK, I only remember seeing one replay, and it obviously wasn't the same as yours. I have no experience of Johnson being a cheat, so I guess I got a bit carried away.

Mind you, I feel, sometimes, that I should be carried away.

I liked old baldy Collina too.

But my favourite ref was the Swedish Porn Star Anders Frisk.
I liked the cut of his jib. A real man's man.
After he took a knock onthe head from some tosser tossing a coin at him he just packed it all in. A shame.

As far as worst players go, I have to nominate that Valter Birsa for Slovenia. The shittiest, most untalented knobhead I've watched in a while.

The Italian goalie was an embarrassment. The face on Buffon as he watched from the touchline in disgust. Shameful.

Remember in the late eighties and early 90's you'd have a dominant midfield leader - a Hagi, a Stoichkov a Valderama type character?
Very few around now.

But their are pretenders. Lads pretending to be 'the man'. That Karagounis for Greece is one. Hairy little man with no discernable talent.
Birsa for Slovenia was another.

Why do they let players who have no skill, ability to read the game or ball control take all the corners, free kicks and decide the run of play?

Why?

WHY?????

Messi is a great little player and does his thing but he doesn't dominate.
Xavi is great at controlling the tempo and passing the ball around but has anyone ever seen him take a shot? Well? have you?

Veron is old school, but he just doesn't perform 100% when it counts.

Liked that chap form Italy that got their second goal. A bit of life in him. More than I could say about any of the others.

Bye bye, Italy.
You had to be found out eventually.

In an unrelated matter, I have managed to loose half a stone.
Another half to go and I'll be at my ideal 13 stone weight. Then I can sell my body to the highest bidder.

Football.
Its a funny old game.

Not a patch on North Korea's goalie.
On my North Korean telly he saved every single one of those 7 Portuguese goals!
And won the World Cup for the glorious nation!
Well done you!

Quagliarella, thats the lads name for Italy.
Made a difference when he came on. Italy should have taken Ballatelli along. Even if he is temperamental (mental) - if only for the purpose of stuffing the Italian racists.

How could I forget to nominate this fella as WORST PLAYER AT THE WORLD CUP;

Jesus Navas of Spain. Complete waste of space. Why in God's name is he in the Spanish team and somebody like Fabregas on the bench. I'd put a lump of coal out on the wing before I'd put that Navas back on again for Spain.

Now it is time for Japan to beat those boring Danes and move onwards and upwards.
Come on Japan.

I've decided to put my oar in: Don't get dazzled by the hype surrounding Englands win against Millwall (was it them?)

All of England, Italy, France, North Korea, Honduras are all crap (apart from Milner and Upson, English Bulldogs).

New Zealand deserve a medal and Slovakia too.

My favs up till now, the Yanks, they fucking fight for the right and have balls, superb!

Maybe England should take a leaf out of their National pride and stiff the fucking Krauts, if they do that, I'm back on the bus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good to see the World Cup holders go out. And finishing bottom of their group, underneath New Zealand, was the icing on the cake.

I like Chile.

Holland, despite going through with 9 points, looked like shit. Actually, I didn't see last night's game against Cameroon, but in the games against Denmark (especially) and Japan, they were very ordinary.

England, of course, were truly awful.

Germany: you never know what is going to happen with them. On the face of it, they are average, but ...

Brazil: not seen them yet. After my bedtime, I'm afraid.

Argentina look OK, but if Messi gets a knock, they will be struggling too.

Spain: not sure about them. Been disappointing thus far. I hope they continue being disappointing because I want Chile to beat them. I like Chile. I may have mentioned this already.

By the way, this:

didn't mean that I start to be afraid after my bedtime.

That Japanese motorbike bloke, Honda - the blonde (?) Japanese player - played a blinder against Denmark.

I wuz WELL impressed.

Italy - reminded me of England in days gone by. It was too late by the time they pulled their fingers out.

I blame negative tactics.

Great game to watch though.

France were just crap.

I know I'm gonna regret asking this stupid question, but here goes: How can North Korea still be in the Cup after that thrashing they got from Portugal?

Kim Jong Il threaten to nuke the games?

They're in groups of four. Nobody gets eliminated until they've played three games. Then two from each group go out.

After that it's 16 teams in a straightforward knockout competition.

Then it's down to 8, then 4, then the final two teams contest the final.

See I told you, stupid question. but I appreciate your patience and your answer. Now makes sense.
They will be marching home, at least what is left of them, after today I'm sure.

USA have the best attitude I've seen in years. Very good in Confederations Cup last year and should have won it. They were 2-0 up against Brazil in the final but then just fell to pieces.
Japan are an inspiration to the likes of England, Italy, France.
Germany should really beat England. They deserve to go further much more than England. At least they have actually played football instead of the long ball.
Holland are unimpressive but they have Robben back now and should get better. VanPersie getting a goal last night will boost his confidence.
Like the look of Chile. Good going forward, nice defence and could be a real contender.
Paraguay have a solid defence and can sneak in goals.
The Brazil team is probably the worst I have ever seen. They depend on Kaka and, lets be honest here, he is a bit hit and miss. But they have an easy draw and are jammy bastards. Could win the whole thing but it would be a shame if they did.
Portugal have very good defence but Ronaldo on his own up front is not much use.

Spain are awful up front despite Torres and Villa. I think Chile will beat them tonight and they'll be off home like France and Italy. Very disappointing.
If Spain beat Chile tonight I will take a picture of myself topless and post it as my avatar!

I wish USA would win the whole thing.

Brazil v Portugal today.

Dull.

Seem's Dunga, the Brazilian coach has taken a lot of flak back home for selecting functional, rather than inspired players.

I agree. I fell asleep. Big bore. Only thing interesting was the yellow cards. Don't think I've seen that many recently.

Brazil is capable of playing a much more enthusiastic game.

Guys and girlies, sad news from outer Siberia, Deutschland have just won the World Cup in tiddlywinks, they beat the English 5 - 1, but the Brits have protested because they claim Germany cheated, one of their chips crossed the line and wasn't seen by the referees, a sleeping Walrus and a blind snow-bat!

Nevermind!!!!!!!!!
