Just writing this because I've seen one or two questions from American readers/writers about the ash cloud, asking what it's like etc.

Here's my take on it:

There's no obvious difference. Today where I am on the South Coast of England, it's been bright and sunny. No different to any other bright sunny day, to all intents and purposes.

The only changes I see from the ash cloud come at dawn and sunset, and even then, they're very subtle differences. Yesterday morning for instance, I was on my way to work when the sun came up. The sky in the east was a kind of slightly hazy orangey grey, with a few clouds that were a deep bluish purple. But it really wasn't so dramatic you'd notice it if you weren't aware of the ash cloud.

Sunsets can be quite dramatic shades of red, orange and a hazy blue grey - but then that's not so unusual either.

This stuff is way up high, and as it consists of minute silica particles it can cause irrepairable damage to jet engines as it's drawn through the intakes and passes through the engine.

Sorry to disappoint, but it's not really anything dramatic at all.

Regards

Skoob.
