For me, General Patton was probably one of the best - though I have to admire the strategic skill of Monty.

DW: a bit pompous from all anglo accounts.... Patton had the balls, but he was a loose cannon... Rommel wasn't too shabby, just on the wrong side..... And DeGaule was a complete ass hole..... Morse |

General disarray - The state of discussion forum posts a few weeks ago, though the powers that be seem to have solved the problem. |

General Nathan Bedford Forrest was probably the best cavalry commander in the civil war. The fact that he founded the KKK after the war doesn't ruin the fact that he was brilliant.
Rommel and Patton (the two greatest tank generals) both studied the tactics of Forrest. Rommel also visited the United States in the 30's and walked his battlefields. |

Being a published writer of US (un)Civil War history, my favorite army general (out of the three Gen. George Pattons) is West Virginia's own George Patton I, grandfather of the WWII GSP. He was killed in combat during the War of Southern Independence, or, The Late Unplesantness, as we call it round here, donchaknow.
Even though my ancestors fought for Generals Lee and the other famous WV Confederate hero, Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, and my overall US Army hero-general of all time is Colin Powell; and though it might get my young ass booted from the Sons of Confederate Veterans, my unCivil War favorite is none other than General Sherman, Yankee bastard that he was. Favorite Admirals: Yamamoto (the sneaky bastard), and Bull Halsey. Air Farce Generals: West Virginia's Charles "Chuck" Yeager. USMC Generals: Vandergrift and Chesty Puller. |

********************************************************* my two favorite generals have to be general robert e. lee and general stonewall jackson. my son's name is jacob robert edward, after my daddy, robert edward, who was named in honor of general robert e. lee. my uncle's name is jackson roger, after his father, andrew jackson, named in honor of stonewall jackson. my ancestors also fought under lee and jackson in the war to liberate the south. |

Curtis "Nuke em" LeMay was a paper tiger (though he did scare the Soviets shitless long before Reagan).
"Dug out Doug" should have faded away sooner, perhaps at childbirth. Lord Nelson was an incredible Admiral--but too good a target. Lord Robert Baden-Powell kicked some Booer ass. Monty was a full fledged flake. Ike was the very best hero general to serve as President. |
