the self-check out at the wal-mart here was malfunctioning; instead of giving out $1 bills, it was giving out $20 bills in change.

as soon as i received the incorrect (extra) amount in change after my purchase, i told the nearby guard, who closed the station.

i then gave my receipt and change to the manager, who gave me the correct amount and thanked me profusely.

responsibility begins with oneself and much can be determined concerning the content of a person's character from situations such as this.

back when my oldest son (now deceased) was 12 years old, we went to a supermarket closing. he needed some boxes for a school project and was granted permission to retrieve some from a large rack outside the front door.

within moments, he showed me a large shoe box he had found, which was perfect for his project.

when we got back into the car, he opened it, and inside was over $10,000, the receipts for the store.

without hesitation, my child got out of the car and returned the money to the store manager.

at the time we were destitute and desperately in need of money, but to me my child's actions were far more precious than the contents of that box.

some people call us old fashioned, idiots, and worse.

but at least we know at the end of the day that our family still stands for honesty and integrity.

i try very hard not to judge people for actions such as these, but it is pretty difficult to have much respect for them.
