A few things I know about the British:

1). Several of them have bad teeth.

2). The British Isles weren't cold and miserable enough for them, so they colonized New England.

3). Most of their spoof writers are funnier in the discussion forum than in their stories, though the sun never sets on their online Spoof empire.

4). Elizabeth Hurley alone justifies the existence of the British people, and Lucy Pinder can read me a bedtime story any day.

5). Revolutionary War aside, we still have a soft spot for each other.

Point 1 :- True.

Point 2 :- Probably true. Although I wasn't around at the time. Thus am not really qualified to comment.

Point 3 :- I dunno about this one. It all depends on which writers you're referring to.

Point 4 :- Despite being happily married, that sounds like a mighty fine idea to me. I have to be diplomatic here because she's sitting next to the legendary big stick. It's within easy reach. Which is way too close for my liking...

Point 5 :- Yes. I think that's true in most instances. You guys seem to admire the UK for its history and sense of fairness. We admire you guys for your willingness to pitch in in a crisis, for your brashness, and basically your honesty.

Probably QM could be more expansive here than I - it appears she flits between the two. I've only ever visited the USA the once. New York City in 2004. I really enjoyed it. Especially the way that New Yorkers, who have a rep here for being crotchety, were universally polite and utterly charming. We only explored Manhattan because it was the week leading up to Chrismas. But the Mrs and I walked the length of 125th Street in Harlem, walked through Chinatown, Little Italy, Greenwich Village, and had a great time.

We stayed at The Gramercy Park Hotel, right at the bottom end of Lexington Avenue.

It was the fulfillment of a long held ambition to visit New York, which took a long time to come to fruition because I used to have a dread of flying. I'm okay with it now. Quite enjoy it in fact.

We look forward to a return visit. There's a rail trip across the USA from coast to coast, and finances permitting, that's our next big trip.

It takes in NYC, Washington DC, Chicago, Denver, The Grand Canyon, LA and SF.

Fond memories of New York, loved it. But would like to see more of the nation.

Best Regards SFO

Skoob.

This should have been a headline in the UK:

Skoob,

San Francisco is a lot like a smaller version of NYC.

I can travel any direction from my place 1 mile, and be in practically a different world.

Never seen Chicago or D.C., but the rest on the list are great.

I loved New Orleans the first two times I was there, and would like to see how it progressing as they rebuild. I hope the influx of new money doesn't ruin the city's charm.

I lived in Texas for about 22 years. I'll vouch for Austin - coolest city in Texas. Just try to go there in when the weather is not so extreme.

Regards,

Was once offered a trip to Arlington Tx through my job, but couldn't make it. Those who did spoke very highly of it.

My son-in-law is a New Yorker, my sister in law is from Wisconsin. We all get along really great. My brother in law lives in Virginia in the DC suburbs and he's extended an open invitation to visit but I never took him up on it because I prefer to pay my own way. (He's the wife's brother.)

He got my son in law and step-daughter tickets for a Redskins game, where Aretha Franklin sang at half time.

Almost all the Americans I've met on my travels have been good people, as are the American contributors to this site. Your good self and Frankie the J included. As far as I can gather anyway. I don't see America through rose-tinted spectacles. You have your fair share of assholes, just like anywhere else. But over all, the vast majority of you come across as thoroughly decent human beings.

You ever been to the UK SFO?

Regards

Skoob.

Skoob,

I've never been outside of the USA, except for Tijuana, which most people say doesn't count.

It's a goal of mine to eventually visit Italy - Florence, Venice, Rome.

Second on my list would be Kenya.

After that, I'm not sure.

I moved to San Francisco because it has nearly everything you could want. Thirty minutes on a train, and you're in the mountains. There's ocean and beach in walking distance from my room, though I wish the water was warm enough to swim in, and Golden Gate Park is an amazing man-made urban forest.

Eight blocks away, it's just like Manhattan. There's Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf (our "Little Italy"), Japantown, the Mission District, The Presidio, the Castro District, even my little neighborhood in lower Nob Hill is pretty cool, though it's pretty much chock full of transsexual prostitutes from 2-5 a.m.

Everywhere you go, there are hills, so there are some really incredible views. On top of Buena Vista Park is probably my favorite.

I've also heard it's the most Eoropean of American cities, in part because of laws passed to help preserve architecture more than 100 years old. Also, they won't let Wal*Mart and McDonald's and corporate places overrun the place, so there's lots of "mom and pop" businesses where you can get really good food from pretty much any culture at a really reasonable price, and lots of street vendors, open air markets, small independent grocers, etc.

Cool place.

Wish rent wasn't so damned expensive, because I may have to go back to Texas or something. God forbid.

Regards,

SFO

P.S. Sorry so choppy. At work again.

No apology required.

Interesting that you mention Rome and Florence.

Mrs Skoob and I honeymooned in Rome a couple of years ago. We've been together for 17 years now, second time around for both of us. I proposed to her years ago, but nothing came of it. Then we went to Florence, and I proposed to her for a second time on the Ponte Vecchio. She accepted , and this time we went through with it. At last. She doesn't really beat me with a stick. It's just my little joke. I love her dearly, and I think I always will. Hope so anyway. Can't see it going in any other direction.

The Ufizzi galleries in Florence are amazing.

And the people are so friendly.

There is a presence of Eastern European Gypsies (mainly Bulgarians) who lower the tone a bit by begging. But just tell 'em to 'fuck off' and they tend to leave you alone.

Pisa is also pretty cool.

I made a point of telling some of them that there was no way their tower was straight. Don't think they got the joke though.

Rome is my favourite city of any I've ever visited.

Curiously, the first day I ever spent there was just massively frustrating because they do things so differently to how we do here. It's pretty hard to get your head round.

Tickets for this, tickets for that, one counter for one thing, another for something else.

But once you get the hang of it, Rome is the best. I grew to love it. Lovely people, great interaction, and one of the planet's most historic cities. It's more romantic than Paris. It's my number one destination ever. I'd go there right now if that were possible. Runner up is Barcelona, another amazing place. But it's a close run thing.

Thanks SFO for sharing your thoughts.

It really is appreciated.

All The Very Best Wishes

Skoob.
