Now, I get that some internationally wanted leader is in hiding for 16 years, and he committed a billion atrocities...

But, it kinda happened before the idea of me even happened, so someone explain - in depth - what happened in Bosnia, and exactly why this person in particular?

It's when a footballer is out of contract and gets a free transfer.

That doesn't exactly answer the question, especially since the way I phrased it didn't even make your response fit in anyway.

Ok...nephew...this will not be in depth at all....I'm tired. Basically, he's being extradited for genocide and war crimes. Why him? I guess they want anyone who was thought to be behind such crimes to have some sort of day in court.

Like, I said, not in depth. I know my response isn't even really worth a Cliff's notes version.

You must be super busy with your studies to not have had the time to look it up on The Economist, or CNN or whatever.

Hope it helps....

He gave the orders to kill 7000 muslim men and boys in a small town called srebrenica. It took 6 days to complete the killings, and no one really found out why he did it. The town wasn't particularly big, and the people weren't a threat to him.

It might help to add that this was part of the wars following the break-up of Yugoslavia - there were all sorts of atrocities and it was, I believe, the conflict(s) that gave us the appalling euphemism "ethnic cleansing" for genocide.

I always thought the media's use of the term indicated an acceptance that the victim race was a stain or blemish. The media should have stuck to using "genocide."

I think so, too. I didn't really understand that war at the time, but there was a good article in the Independant yesterday that explained it all in detail.

I agree. I never understand wars while they're happening. It'll probably be another 15 years before I can figure out what these present ones are all about.

I concur. I did Modern World History last year (I'm doing
Depth Studies - International Relationships this year), and I thought that if WWI was simply not started, then WW2 wouldn't start either, because Hitler (as this year's sylabus has taught me) used the Treaty of Versaille (ratified at the end of WWI) as a launchpad for his views. However, he only did get 44% of the votes, so really, most Germans were not Nazis.

That leads onto my next question... did the UN or NATO go in? Did we send people in? I'm sure our troops were not involved in any armed conflict at the time, so....

If you mean into the Balkans - NATO sent in a peacekeeping force.

A few Brit merecenaries fought for Croatia.

If you mean WWII - we sent some in there, but it was Tom Hanks and Matt Damon what won it.

People gave him rosary beads.

He survived.
