As a kid I really loved cheese.

In poor old post-war 50's rationed Britain it was an oasis of taste in a poverty-stricken young gourmet's world (see Nigel Slater. See Vesta curries.).

Cheese on toast. Cheddar, Cheshire, Wensleydale, Lancashire, Caerphilly...mmmmmm. Comforting, crusty, mouth-watering and delicious alternatives to the usual bread and dripping and powdered egg diet in those distant black & white days.

Fast forward to the hip '90's and the advent of nouvelle cuisine, Gordon Ramsay and TV Masterchefs. Cheese was relegated to an alternative - a poor cousin to puddings with their macadamia and frangipani liqueur jus...

Happily, cheese is back - bigger, glitzier and - more smelly than ever!! Just look at your local M & S Cheese counter website - and other sites - if you doubt it.

And the French no longer have a monopoly on big or really smelly cheeses! As with wine, the United States have come to the fore with some of the pongiest offerings around.

I saw one the other day from the States on the internet that looked very tasty. So I clicked on it, and I'm here to tell you it lived up to its name - 'Artisanal' (true! Google it!).

That's not to say that Brit cheeses haven't moved on either (see 'Stinking Bishop'. Smell old rope).

My current cheese passion is a variety of Gouda, a cow's milk, that is known as 'The Queen of Cheese'. It is quite sour and somewhat tart, not to everyone's taste, but it has something going for it, although more than a tiny slice can make you feel a bit queezy! LOL.

So, fellow writers - what are your favourite cheeses?

I like cheese-cake - which isn't made of cheese but that's as close as you'll get me to cheese.
I'd actually love some cheese cake now with a cup of tea.

I love cheese of all types. There's a monastery near here where they make all this great cheese.

However, the wife wants me to take the aged cheese outside and eat it, as it has a strong pong, I admit.

Love Stilton but can't afford it often.

I believe most of the bad stuff is 'churned' out.

A friend of mine likes cheese strings, y'know, the bland endless production-line stuff.

In the US I understand that most cheese is processed, perhaps Bureau would know?

Btw Bureau, I love Stilton too, particularly, the really matured, blue-veined crusty stuff! Can't take too much of it, but great with port or an amontillado sherry! Do you have cheese triangles over there? A bit like Toblerone, but made with cheese (of a sort).

The Monks and the Amish make the best cheese here. But none as good as the Stilton.

Can't afford anything but the tawny port with the cheese.

Regular cheese here is processed I think. But the imports are offered at some places.

Food prices going wild here. Cans and packages of food products are shrinking but prices jump anyway.

Really good stinky cheese, especially when you left it out for awile to get a little runny...bet JO nose/knows!

Similarly, "bull's milk cheese" is best avoided. If you are offered it in a bedouin tent, always claim diplomatic immunity or feign madness, whichever comes first.
